Your right I don't think we will have to play 4 guards. But I am starting to think Paulsen wants to play with 4 guards. He has made a few comments about college basketball and the NBA are all starting to go to a 4 guard line up.

Adding Mar and Wilson to the rotation will increase our length, improve our defense and replace some of Marquise's rebounding without sacrificing athleticism.

It doesn't necessarily mean we won't use some four-guard lineups, but I think Goanar is gonna push to start from Day 1. He is special.

I agree. But I will say it looks like there's going to be some fierce competition at the 2 and 3 spots next season. I'm not sure how it's going to shake out, but I can imagine any pair of Grayer, Newman, Boyd, and Kier starting there.

Yep and Kier can play the point too if Greene isn't ready to spell Otis right away.

We will still be young, but deeper overall than at any point since the 2011-12 team. Bottom line is, the best players play. A nice luxury to have options.

Since he was recently mentioned on this thread, I am just curious to know if anyone has seen or heard how AJ is doing in practice? Random 1pm on a Friday thought..

Mason's Relvao finds his passion in basketball and technology | George Mason @VolgenauSchool is proud of Daniel !! https://www2.gmu.edu/news/386896

Daniel Relvao, a 6-foot-9 redshirt freshman, said he was drawn to mechanical engineering because it is an area "where you actually fix things and find out how things work.'"Photo by Rafael Suanes.

"Whether he’s on the court or in the classroom, Daniel Relvao likes to make things work.

The redshirt freshman and forward on George Mason University’s men’s basketball team works hard to balance the demands of his mechanical engineering major with his team responsibilities. They will come together during the “Celebrating Technology” game Wednesday night against Duquesne.
'The 'Celebrating Technology” theme at EagleBank Arena will recognize the technology industry’s impact on the regional community. Two events—the Technology Career Tip-off, a student recruitment event, and the Volgenau School of Engineering Cocktail Reception for alumni and B2B networking—will take place before the game to connect companies with members of the George Mason community. Facts about technology education will also appear on screens throughout the game.

Relvao said he got his passion for technology and engineering from his father, who also majored in mechanical engineering and now works as a pilot. Relvao hopes to work with motorcycles.

'I like to know how things work. I like to fix things. Mechanical engineering is one of the [areas] where you actually fix things and find out how things work, so it all connects,' he said.

Born in Portugal, the 6-foot-9, 255-pound power forward began playing basketball in his junior year at Mountain Mission High School in Grundy, Va., following his family’s move to the United States. He redshirted at Mason during the 2015-16 season, and has also played for Portugal’s national team.

Relvao’s days consist of morning classes, practice with the team and sometimes heading back to class at night. Though his day may be busier than the average student’s, he says it is important to stay focused on his studies.

'It’s really important because if I weren’t focused on academics, I don’t know if I could do this major…and if I didn’t have good grades, I couldn’t play,' Relvao said.

His support starts with his team. Coach Dave Paulsen said his staff must ensure players find and excel in their passions on and off the court.

'Our job is to give them a big picture view [on education]…and connect them with the larger Mason community,' Paulsen said."

Coach mentioned at the end of the postgame press conference that Daniel still is affected by last season's knee surgery-he wasn't cleared to practice until around October. Consequently Coach isn't clear on how high his athletic ability ceiling is yet. Looks forward to his continued recuperation over the summer.

So at least it's possible that we might see a significant bump up in his performance next season. Some hope for the future!!

Just want to point out that what you stated is *exactly* what the By George guys have been saying. In addition to not being 100% all season, Relvao's redshirt year was mostly wasted from a development perspective because he was sitting down and recovering. So while guys like AJ Wilson redshirt and practice, play, and condition all season long, Relvao wasn't doing any of that.

I was apoplectic about our big situation for next year until By George pointed that out. Then I started paying closer attention to the things Relvao does well and it's apparent there's a lot to work with there. This offseason will be his first where he's mostly healthy and able to do the things that help players develop. I think a massive leap in productivity is in play for him next year and a starting lineup of three guards and Wilson/Relvao isn't totally out of the question.

So, are you looking at Coach Paulsen possibly deploying multiple types of lineups next season?

a "5" and 4 guards;
a "5", stretch "4", and 3 guards;
a stretch "4" and 4 guards; or
5 guards

He looked better yesterday than he had all season. Maybe I've been wrong. Didn't realize he didn't start playing until October because of the knee. It makes sense though; he looks slow and bends over in a way that makes me think he's worried about the knee going at any second. Maybe it's all psychological and when he learns to trust the knee again he'll be quite good. I've been down on him all season but maybe a real off season and some confidence will do him wonders.

All he has to do is just be a bit better at defending and rebounding. And maybe being fully healed and conditioned solves that "slowness" we see.

He doesn't need to be the 2nd coming of Will Thomas.

Exactly... with a guard-heavy team in a guard-heavy league, in an increasingly guard-heavy NCAA, we don't need a ton of offense from the bigs. But since we will face a few bigger teams each year, we need better defense at the 4 and 5. If Relvao truly wasn't 100%, and if he will be next year, and if our the other guys are even half as good as everyone is pretending they are, and Troy shows reasonable improvement, if if if if... things might not be as bleak as we think. Otis, Grayer, Kier, Newman, and Boyd can all be counted on to be consistent scorers next year. To compliment our guards, we need a serviceable big who can guard, rebound, and give us a enough points that the opponent knows they have to guard him. Throw in a couple more bigs into the rotation, and we can even go with a 3 guard lineup when necessary against bigger opponents. I'm not saying we're guaranteed another 20 win season, but I don't feel like we're going to be anywhere near as bad as the last 2-3 years.

Or, when Abrams transfers, we go after a JUCO Junior or Senior or a grad transfer who can help right away, and we actually have a team next year. Don't be surprised to see Grayer and Boyd become premier rebounders like MM. We won't see another season like his 2016-17 season for a long time, but between the two of them, they can pick up the slack. Boyd in particular showed some real improvement in positioning and effort late this season. And Grayer will want to follow in 'Quise's footsteps and be the next big star.

I thought Revao played pretty good against vcu. ive noticed he keeps his head down a lot, if he just picks up his head he will have better court vision and you will see improvement

Yes, absolutely. I've got a few thoughts about the starting lineup:

- I think Paulsen probably wants to go back to base three guards and two bigs. Our four guard lineup this season didn't do many of the things you want a four-guard lineup to do - most notably shoot threes, run in transition and force turnovers. Our conservative defensive style of play - keep the opponent out of the paint, make them take contested jumpers, grab every rebound - is much better suited to a conventional three guard/two big lineup. I still don't totally know how we made that work with four guards this year.

- If that's true, I think Kier probably goes to the bench and Boyd or Karmari grabs a starting spot. Kier was great as the fifth starter all season long, but if we're starting two bigs we can't count on a ton of offense from them. We'll need someone with a more polished offensive game to help take some of the scoring load off Otis and Jaire, and right now that's not Kier's game. Karmari is the best at creating for himself offensively, but if you're starting Otis and Karmari in the same backcourt you've got size issues (assuming Karmari doesn't put on 20 pounds). Boyd's got a shot to start if he can fix his fouling issues.

I don't have any inside info so this is all speculation, but a ton of things Dave does on both sides of the ball aren't really suited for a four-guard lineup. Of course, we'll see plenty of four guard deployed situationally, but five guard probably goes away forever. He only used that in desperation time against teams whose bigs were total stiffs (i.e. St Joe's, Fordham, etc).

Grayer, Boyd, and Wilson together will make this team incredibly athletic. Boyd had a drive across the lane for a layup yesterday that was extremely explosive. We are in a great place!

I agree on Boyd for sure. He was impressive yesterday in that he's not afraid of the body contact that some of the younger guys might shy away from. Causes fouls, sure - but we can't be timid against the older bigger guys. His football background helps here.

Daniel looks better every game -- let's hope he keeps works on his conditioning over the break - gets those knees game ready.

I think Boyd has played his way into serious consideration to take the mantle from Moore next season.

Ideally I'd like to see Otis, Boyd, Gayer, Wilson, Relvao as our starting five next year.

I also really hope Greene can give us 8-10 decent minutes so Otis doesn't get so worn down like the last two years.
