I'm a little torn on the idea of redshirts. A year ago we all were certain Trey Porter should have redshirted. A few bong hits later we were all thankful he didn't.
Redshirting as a freshman these days opens up the likelihood that the guy jumps to a bigger program his fifth year of eligibility. Also, with 4 more spots to fill next year, it would just delay our 6-man class for a year.
I say let them all play. More than likely one or two are going to see that they are probably not cut out to see a lot of the floor at Mason and they may make their own decisions to move on. If that happens, that's ok. We'll eventually get the balance we need.
You can remove a player's redshirt at any moment. If, God forbid, we have another Copes situation and wind up shorthanded we can always just scrap the redshirt plan and throw one of the freshmen into the rotation.
It just doesn't make sense to me to not redshirt if you have a developmental prospect who you believe can become a significant contributor down the road.
You're never going to have meaningful minutes for more than 10-11 guys tops, and burning 25 percent of a player's eligibility for garbage minutes is stupid unless the kid and his family are just absolutely opposed to any suggestion of redshirting.
I'd rather risk losing a kid as a 5th-year senior, after which he presumably would've given us 3 seasons of increasingly valuable contribution, than cause a promising young guy to leave because he's frustrated over playing time.
