GMU: Where Construction is Tradition

The soccer stadium will probably something like the other 3K seat stadiums around the NCAA. Nothing too fancy, but I know it'll be pretty.

A nice stadium to replace the old 5K seat one would be beneficial to Mason too. Not only for Soccer and W Lacrosse, but possible future sports like Field Hockey, Men's Lax, Rugby or FCS Football (I know, far fetched).

Mason's proximity to DC would also make a nice 15K+ seat stadium a viable concert venue too for Summer Tours. Even host festivals or similar events. Especially if we build small, but with all the amenities like premium boxes, etc.
Wow you would never guess by looking at it that those are a reduction in capacity compared to the current shithole. I agree we should have a stadium that can host other events, and I'm surprised when people say a football stadium would sit dormant in the offseason. Regardless I'll be so f**king happy to see Mason Stadium go. I can understand not going the football route for the time being, but we have a good soccer program and the right demographics at the school to create a great soccer atmosphere.

I don't think you could have a football team and soccer team share the same field, a, because trying to play soccer on a field lines for football is horrible, but b the seasons run pretty much concurrently in the NCAA.

But maybe that's why they are moving the soccer stadium over?

Idk, the void Mason stadium would leave wouldn't be expandable because of the field house. It may leave room to build a better track facility? Idk. It seems odd to not just redo the whole thing because the area they have outlined for the new soccer field seems really boxed in.

Sorry, I didn't make that clear. I meant having a stadium to replace the current Mason Stadium in addition to the Soccer Specific Stadium.

Lax can easily share a field with Football though. UMD and most B1G schools do. UVA's Lax shares a field with Soccer.

I don't think you could get a football stadium on that location without demolishing everything aside from maybe the field house. Stadiums take up a lot of room and Edwards has stated if they ever do go to football they'll do it right and FBS which means at least 30,000 seater. West campus just isn't big enough unless everything over there was demolished and reconfigured.

Hopefully by this upcoming season. They have the rest of summer and all of fall to complete. The VMDO site said construction would have been done by Feb 2014 and it was announced in Feb 2013. Should be less than a year.
Correct me if I'm wrong but they're only doing the dugouts at this time right? The land and building committee reports only make mention of the dugouts, which is is dissapointing because the seating area is worse than my high schools.

Yea, I don't see how it would be possible to complete the entire new stadium by start of next season. This must just be Phase 1.

For phase one, the dugouts and the backstop are being replaced, and possibly a few other things (e.g. improvements to fences, scoreboard), but you are correct. They are fundraising for the second phase of the project, which would replace the seating area, pressbox, etc. Phase one was budgeted at $1.3 million (which last I heard they pretty much had in hand) and phase two was budgeted at $3 million if I remember correctly. If you want to donate, talk to Jennifer Montgomery.

I'm a bit frustrated with the donation process at the minute. They kept calling me during class and I told them to call someday other than Tuesday/Thursday and I'd be happy to donate something. They never called back.

Then I asked campus planning to show me an updated master plan/southwest sector plan/athletics plan so I could see what my money would be going towards. They told me they'd get back to me and never did. I'd be fine if they had at least said "we can't disclose that right now" or something. But I literally tried to give them my money and they couldn't get back to me.

What's your number? ;)

Hard to believe BE would be difficult to contact if you are really all in on making baseball better. Don't yap here, yap there.

I never said Brad wasn't open. I think he's doing a fantastic job. I said the school was doing a poor job as a whole and I think his counterparts who run faster farther are letting him down. I wasn't trying to donate to baseball but I did try to donate towards general faster further. I don't think twice telling the school I would donate only to have them not get back to me is yapping online without trying to take actions. My point was that I'm done seeking out the school out and saying "take my money."

That being said if they do go through with a new soccer stadium I will cut a check. But I think it's fair say to someone who has suggested earlier in the thread that I donate to baseball that I'm frustrated with the schools approach right now.

I have jumped back on board after the PH era. BE was very nice to me when we met at the DP intro and I am in for a tiny 4 figure annual give now. If you want to help these kids you can help by dialing him up to express your concerns first and then stroke a check. You'll get a lot more done with him than venting here. Nice guy. ;)
