I heard that too - but they also need a drill field and buildings for the military education/classes - that land seems to be perfectly suited to do that - could put a nice drill and parade field with buildings around it. Since it is located near heart of campus it would be convenient.
Yeah it would, just seems like at this point in Mason's developmental stage it would be more wisely used on something revenue generating like housing. But I do agree the ROTC program needs some new digs. Although maybe they will get that land if the southwest sector plan is imminent.

From what we've been told, 80% of funds have to be donated through 'big' donations before they go public. I put in my two cents about corporate donors and asked for no naming rights because people would lose their minds (I know I would).

By George and GK will host fundraising events once the threshold is reached for public 'small' donations, so make sure to come through!

I think they're only taking $25K+ donations rn.

Other news;
Baseball stadium expansions might take place this late this summer. Still no official announcement / start date as of yet.

Why do you want no naming rights?!?!?!?. A practice facility is long over due. Pearson and Morison said they were promised a facility!

I can kind of understand why we didn't want to see the Patriot Center to be renamed. The building has history. However, a new facility has no history. It is a clean slate. So who cares what the name of the building is! If someone wants us to pay to put up a sign with their name, go ahead.

Green Acres becoming part of Mason seems obvious. I actually thought Mason already bought it (or tried to?)

For the right price, I'll change my name to Eagle, last name Bank.

If it's named after an alum with deep pockets, cool. If its a company started up or led by an alum, cool. If its just some dudes who wanna drop some cash for marketing purposes, Im not cool with it.

Its my personal view, but I think we should name things after alums, prominent admins, professors or those who have helped the university greatly. I'd be fine with the Larranaga Building or something -- even TOC's name on it lol I just don't want the building to be named after some company that just so happens to have a few millions left over in its marketing budget.

We should put more emphasis on protect what little tradition we have. We are still a young university so we shouldn't sell out. Gotta think long term. But again, its just my two cents.

That would be awesome! Considering how close we are to the Pentagon and the capital, having a great ROTC program with facilities, housing and a drill field would be beneficial to the university as a whole.

Can't find the article to post but apparently Mason is trying to get its hands on the Northern VA training center land that is closing on Braddock. Could build a massive parking deck there and run shuttles so valuable land wouldn't need to be used for more park decks on campus.

Unfortunately finding the alumni that has deep pockets is easier said than done being such a young university. They did name a building after the Merten's and George Johnson already since they were school presidents.

That being said, I'd have to think that the new facility will probably have a piece of a corporate name (if not the facility, maybe an area will be corporate named) somehow unless they get a donor for the whole thing. The Volgenau engineering building still had all sorts of companies on a wall.

All a hunch and I really don't know what will transpire and what the plan is.

I dont mind if a weight room or something is named after a company, but the building itself shouldn't. JMO

Respectfully disagree. Ideally, calling it the Larranaga Building would be great, but that is doubtful. I'd rather have the Jim McKay Practice Facility or something like that than nothing at all. If a car company or a brand of food wants to sponsor it that'd be great. I'd just stay away from anything that could be perceived as partisan (The 700 Club Building, The Chic Fil A Center, etc.)

There's no way it's going to be named after a corporation. Not even Oregons new practice facility is named after Nike (or even Phil Knight).

City of Fairfax may do a land swap with Mason for Green Acres property.

I personally think Mason should expand towards Main street to build more dorms and also allow students to actually be a part of Fairfax -- give it more of a college town feel.

I maintain that Mason allowing that old bus depot to be bought by someone else and turned into expensive housing was a MASSIVE mistake. The school should start expanding up university and that would've been a good starting block.

Also it seems odd with Mason's massive push for new housing that it would be interested in swapping current housing for space to build more. Is there not a way to outright purchase the land?
