CBI or CIT?

Some of you people on here are very sad. Excited to play in some garbage tournament. No wonder our program is in the crapper. People are celebrating a 19 win season. Are you kidding me? It is Big dance or bust. Nothing else is acceptable. This season is a disappointment. Show me an A10 championship or an invitation to the big dance, and only then will we be going in the right direction.
Wake up people!

I understand the high expectations, and in a few years that may be the case. But for now considering the dumpster fire Hewitt left us in getting 20 wins is miraculous. Not only are we going in the right direction, we are going there ahead of schedule.

Agreed. I had us at 14 wins this year and a similar number next year. I didn't think we'd sniff 20 wins until 2018-2019.

"It's a good opportunity for the freshman (and the rest of the returning players) to continue to improve.

I'd be somewhat surprised if we don't win this thing."
I think we are the superior team against everyone except GW. I believe Mason has the better team, but its a bad match up for us. So I actually hope GW gets bounced early.

Why did everyone have such low expectations!! I don't get it! We all knew Jenkins and Moore were beasts, We all were super impressed with Otis. We all saw good things from Grayer last season. I don't get why everyone thought we would suck.

The knock against Hewitt was he didn't know X's and O's. He left the team with talent! Paulsen in brought in more talent and knows his X's and O's.

Mason, good things are ahead! Don't sell ourselves short.

He didn't leave us a dumpster fire. He left us Shevon, Moore, Jenkins.... All pretty damn good players. He just didn't have a true Point Guard and didn't know his X's and O's. He didn't know how to manage a game. But he left plenty of good pieces!

Almost all of Hewitt's "talent" left. Jenkins was the only big we had and we were going to have to rely on more unproven freshman to be major contributors for the team to be successful.

We all know Moore and Jenkins were good played, but no one could have predicted Moore was going to have a historic season. Or that Kier was going to give us so many smart minutes (who was even thinking about Kier?)

Next year will be the same. We have zero proven bigs and while we will have a nice back court next season, that front line is going to be a shaky at best.

The goal of this program was to be the Gonzaga of the East. Be better than vcu.

We have fools on this board thinking this season was a success when we lost to vcu three times and didn't come close to a NCAA birth. Nothing else is acceptable. Paulsen should be on the hot seat. Next year if he does not get us into the tournament, he should be fired!

Hewitt did leave us a dumpster fire.. The roster this year was extremely limited, and Dave was able to squeeze every ounce of potential out of it. He left us 3 upperclassmen, 1 of which was a Senior. That's not exactly a strong foundation.

Send an email to Brad saying these comments and please post the response. Maybe you can threaten to pull your donation too to make the double whammy and hit them where it hurts!!!

Exactly. I think the one player who would have worked in Paulsen's system would have been Eric Lockett. A little undersized at 6'5 but he had the bulk already to make up for it and is apparently a defense first type player. Playing him at the 4 this year might have opened up a lot for us against certain teams.

I almost agree. We saw with Hewitt what an extra awful year can do to a program.

In my eyes Paulsen will be on the hot seat next season of we arnt in the discussion for the tournament. And his contract should be seriously evaluated after the 4th season. That is one full recruiting cycle, and for Mason doesn't go dancing by then they never will become a top team in the league

I have moved past my prior thoughts that you don't know much about basketball to the fact that you are just a troll from Southpark. Dave Paulsen will not be on the hot seat next year if we don't make the tourney. that is plain stupid.

Article about Duquesne's participation in last year's CBI - see http://www.post-gazette.com/sports/...-in-CBI-comes-at-a-price/stories/201603160086:

"This year’s group includes no team from the Power Five conferences or the Big East, the first time that has happened in the CBI’s nine-year history. By virtue of being a member of the Atlantic 10 — the highest-rated conference in the RPI outside of that group of six — the Dukes might very well be the tournament’s highest-profile participant. Instead of being populated by larger schools that could more easily afford the fee for being a host, the CBI has become a destination for schools from mid- and low-major conferences searching for extra games, exposure and a level of prestige.

But as it is with any form of competition, there’s an emotional aspect that can sometimes trump a bottom line. Wisconsin-Milwaukee athletic director Amanda Braun, for instance, rejected the idea of playing in the CBI, citing concerns about the pay-to-play model and the very idea of the tournament itself.

'We’re not going to invest money just to say we played more games,' she told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

Milwaukee’s players, however, were stung by the decision, taking to social media to voice displeasure that their 20-win team wasn’t given a chance to extend its season.

The very things that Ferry spoke about in the final weeks of the season hold true for many teams in college basketball. For the Dukes, the CBI represents something more than a third-tier tournament.

'We’re providing an opportunity for schools who want to play,' Cella said. 'You can say all you want — and we read the tweets and articles written about it — but when you hear kids want to keep playing, it’s an opportunity they may not get after this. This may be their last shot of playing, and to deny them that because you think it’s not worthy? It’s ridiculous.'"
