You saying to add it now? Would love to hear how you finance the sport including scholarship, operation, salaries, infra-structure support and Title IX implications.

No. I don’t think we should add football. I think we should focus on making our current sports all as successful as our tack and field and men’s volleyball teams currently are.

The same way any other school does it lol.
If I recall correctly, most other schools we would be compared to aren't as stupid as we are when it comes to other sports. A lot of our comparable schools only support the minimum number of sports whereas Mason has something like 5 extra sports that it is not required to fund.

Brian knows I've been beating this drum for almost 2 decades. I don't believe our next president will ask Brad to cut sports.

Back to the topic, I would like to see our next president keep us on the same tragectory academically, while undertstanding that men's basketball is the front door to the university and willing to support that vision accordingly.

If you are going to add 65-83 men’s scholarships for football you’ll be cutting all men’s sports, some people care about probably (like wrestling, soccer, and volleyball), while probably adding several women’s sports to get compliant with title IX. And then there is the problem of where you plant your football team and whether anyone will actually come to the games and if we could build a stadium anywhere close to the core campus etc. etc.

My advice is to just embrace being a basketball school. We are in one of the best basketball conferences in the country.

Forget football. Cut sports that drain the basketball budget.

Dayton seems to have a decent approach to athletics. It sounds like a decent compromise for the football fans. Dayton is a member of the Atlantic 10 Conference, the University of Dayton sponsors teams in seven men's and ten women's NCAA sanctioned sports.[4] The football team competes as a member of the Pioneer Football League, a non-scholarship Division I (FCS) league.

Non-scholarship football is still expensive and competitively irrelevant at the DI level. Waste of money. Thought you were concerned about draining money with worthless sports that would hurt basketball. This is the king of them all.

I don’t think we’d save enough money shutting down the sports we’d shut down to make it worthwhile from a basketball perspective (didn’t we just find out we haven’t raised the budget for most of our non-revenue sports for something like 10 years?).

Sounds like big losses, but then you look at the 28M of revenue from student fees.

This is a really good find. They are debt riddled, all on the backs of their students. They also had a huge freshman class shortfall. They are academically irrelevant. Mason is killing these programs with what Angel has done with Amazon. That is thousands of students that can now be recruited by George Mason/Amazon that will really hurt the schools you were once compared to. Enrollment nightmare. If folks think FCS football is a magic bullet they are crazy. Huge risk right now.
