Jamal Hartwell Jr., a 2018 PG from Fairfax HS in Los Angeles, is visiting Mason on March 26.

Dave was out in LA watching Hartwell’s team play in the state tournament today.

Gotta think we have a good chance of signing him if he’s willing to fly all the way across the country for a visit.

Hopefully Otis is his host because he’s our greatest testimony to what our program can do for underrecruited point guards.

He’s even smaller than Otis 5’10” 160

Appears to have a chip on his shoulder for being under recruited too, sounds familiar.

After reading the article it doesn’t seem like he wants to play for Montana the one school that has an offer out to him, he’s just waiting for a better offer. Couldn’t find the stats from the game Paulsen went to yesterday but found the final school score. Fairfax lost 62-34.

The positives:

- he reminds me a lot of Otis with the way he changes directions and changes speeds with the ball
- basketball junkies out in California that have seen him play rave about him
- if you believe rankings like ESPN, they have him as a top 50 PG
- he's got a chip on his shoulder about his recruiting - see Otis Livingston
- his dad is an assistant coach at Fairfax, normally means player has a high basketball IQ

The negatives/questions:

- undersized, not just height, but also seems pretty thin. Needs to put on some weight.
- a little concerning his lack of offers, although the staff has done a great job recognizing under the radar guys like him
- read that his defense is a concern
- a little worried about him being all the way across country - is he/his family willing to switch coasts?

Would be a great situation for him to learn/get stronger his first year behind Otis and have three years to run the show.

Agree with what everyone said here. Ballhandling looks good, kid has range and seems under recruited. Obviously the staff thinks they can develop him into something, and hopefully the kid knows how to put in the work as they'll need him by sophomore year.

Hopeful he will commit when he visits.

Interesting how the staff seemed to be looking for a tall PG but now we are back to a undersized kid.

I have zero idea about recruiting and/or if we should sign this kid. I'll leave that up to the more versed recruiting junkies on the board.

But I do like the comment on the twitter page about him:

Also, as sleeperpick pointed out, the kid is 5'10, 145 and has a 3 star rating.

When you are so short (relatively) and razor thin and still get a 3 star rating, it usually means everyone is rating you on your actual play, not "potential".

"Potential" sometimes means they are not rating the player on how good they are currently performing but mostly on their physical prowess and raw athletic ability.

Just want to point out that NOBODY really knows who or what our staff is looking for until somebody takes a visit.

These guys play things pretty close to the vest on recruiting for good reason, so best to take publicized “offers” with a grain of salt.

I have a guy following Paulsen actually and he took the same flight to LA as him. He stopped at a In-N-Out though and lost track of him.
