haha, we'll I guess you didn't get far enough to read "we need more coaches like Hewitt, not fewer."

I guess the writer is a big fan of the guy and can understand what this means

I'm guessing the writer got to know Hewitt when he was at Siena and successful enough to warrant a big jump to the ACC. Hewitt no doubt impressed him as a decent human being with a very professional demeanor. Add that to raising a low major program to considerable success made the writer a fan.

Unfortunately, for whatever reason, his coaching skills at some point were found wanting. Our view is understandably slanted by the disorganized manner that his team's performed. That doesn't mean he is a miserable human being. Just a well-meaning coach who couldn't continue his early success.

Likely, he could be an effective assistant coach at either the pro or college level and I wish him well.

ridiculous article. and if you are going to write so glowingly about the guy, why not get some Hewitt quotes? He isn't coaching so he would have had time for a phone call, email exchange, etc.
I don't want to dwell on the past, but I am interested to hear from Hewitt as to why his time at Mason didn't work out.

That can't be a serious article. Do they not have the internet in upstate NY?

Perhaps the writer should have researched Hewitt's Mason contract which states: "Coach shall have an affirmative obligation to mitigate the amounts paid by University under the Article VIII B, and in the event of termination for convenience use reasonable efforts to seek and obtain another sports- or media-related position, and to mitigate the effects of such termination."

I heard that Hewitt was at a Georgetown practice this week as he is friends with JTIII

Looks like the link posted here has inspired a couple of comments, no doubt from our boards:

Questionable firing at Mason? You have to be kidding. Having met Hewitt he was a an outstanding man, but his coaching, even to this armchair high school coach, was amateur at best despite the so-called "lower level talent."

I'm a George Mason fan. The quality of play took an immediate hit when Hewiit took over for Jim Larranaga. Hewitt's not a bad guy but GMU fans have been left wondering how he had the success he did at Siena. Assistants? Great players?

Larranaga won and academic results were good. I doubt 1 out of 2 for Hewitt at Sienna would have been acceptable either. Funniest line of the piece - "both were questionable decision.

"He required players attend every class when not on the road, and sit in the front rows of those classes. If players had unexcused class absences, the entire team faced early-morning runs of several miles"

Then last year the team should have been full of marathon runners because we know of at least one guy who wasn't showing up to class.....

I only wonder one thing about that article. How much did Hewitt pay the writer to write it.

So thankful that in Hewitt's case, the question "Where are they now?" can be answered with "Not coaching basketball at George Mason University."

Other acceptable answers are: "anywhere but Fairfax," "at the bank cashing his stolen checks," and my personal favorite, "who gives a flying f*ck?"

Unless he sold his house in Oakton, I'm guessing that he's still in Fairfax County.

Ok, I admit I was paid a good amount of money to write it, but at least they allowed me to use a pseudonym.
