Welcome Karmari Newman

http://www.freep.com/story/sports/h...mari-newman-george-mason-basketball/75714368/:

"One of the state's dead-eye shooters is taking his talents to George Mason.

Despite hard recruiting pushes by Detroit Mercy, Oakland University and Buffalo, Kamari Newman of Detroit East English Village took a visit to Fairfax, Va., and was sold. He was to sign his national letter of intent at 1 p.m. today.'

'They already had a plan for me as a freshman,' said the 6-foot-4 lefty who'll be a Mr. Basketball candidate this season. 'As a freshman, I could come in and have a chance to play right away. I watched their practice, and they didn't really have a lot of scorers on their team. I knew that's what they needed. They wanted to help me with more than basketball. They wanted to develop me into a whole person, into a man. I have to take care of my business in the classroom.'"

"At one point, Michigan was in the picture for Newman. Southern Cal made a call, as did Baylor and Iowa.

'A lot of people were telling me things; it was overwhelming,' he said. 'I didn't know what I wanted to do. As I got closer to pulling the trigger, I looked at all my goals and what I was looking for and everything that I wanted to happen in my development. I felt George Mason was the best fit for me.'"

Well, those classes got balanced out QUICK, little concerned that we only have 9 scholarship players now this year though:

Freshmen - Greene, Mar, Wilson, Calixte
Soph - Kier, Boyd, Reuter, Relvao
Junior - Otis, Jaire

Add a stud grad transfer next year and make the sweet 16?

Not sure where a grad transfer would play next season. We're going to have an established group of guys playing most of the minutes, plus adding Reuter at the 5.

But this does give the staff three open scholarships for the Class of 2018. That's a very good thing.

Damn - stings a bit more than Temera perhaps, although the team is deeper at the guard spot. Still should have 5 quality guards - assuming Greene can contribute right away.

Temera is concerning because at least he was a guy GMU could put in a position that already looked very iffy this year.

This one sucks for me. I was a huge fan. Thought he was going to show the most improvement from last year stat wise.

Obviously there must have been something to the reports that Kier has made big progress and Greene has impressed the staff during summer workouts.

The reality in today's game is that guys are competing for playing time on a daily basis.

With Otis and Jaire locked in, there are only so many minutes to go around for guards. Kier and Boyd ended last season ahead of Newman on the depth chart and it doesn't sound like anything has changed in that regard.

Otis is gonna be all alone on the short shorts train now.

Damn, though. I absolutely loved Newman's game. I guess this means some combination of the staff seeing some 2018 prospects that they really want, and Kier and Boyd putting in the work this summer. Boyd has his chance to put the league on notice now.

All the best to Troy and Karmari. Great young men with bright futures.

This makes me believe more that we'll be going with a traditional 3 guard line up. There would be plenty of time left for him if we went to the 4 guard again, he avg 15m last season.

I liked Newman and thought he was better than Boyd last year..... all around. His shooting and speed would be a nice complement to have but I think he wants to play more and probably be closer to home.

Best of luck.... kid is going to be good wherever he goes.

I'd agree, with the caveat being that Boyd as forced to play out of position a ton last season.

Boyd didn't have a flashy freshman season, but he has one thing going for him that would endear him to any coach: He doesn't blow assignments. He knows where he is supposed to be and what he's supposed to be doing. Very smart kid.

The summer was obviously a critical test for all. Seems like a lot of them passed.

God speed.

Loved his game but always thoght he was a bit undersized and that hurt defensively when he and Otis were on the court together.

Going to miss his impactful 3's at seemingly crucial times.
