"One of the state's dead-eye shooters is taking his talents to George Mason.
Despite hard recruiting pushes by Detroit Mercy, Oakland University and Buffalo, Kamari Newman of Detroit East English Village took a visit to Fairfax, Va., and was sold. He was to sign his national letter of intent at 1 p.m. today.'
'They already had a plan for me as a freshman,' said the 6-foot-4 lefty who'll be a Mr. Basketball candidate this season. 'As a freshman, I could come in and have a chance to play right away. I watched their practice, and they didn't really have a lot of scorers on their team. I knew that's what they needed. They wanted to help me with more than basketball. They wanted to develop me into a whole person, into a man. I have to take care of my business in the classroom.'"
"At one point, Michigan was in the picture for Newman. Southern Cal made a call, as did Baylor and Iowa.
'A lot of people were telling me things; it was overwhelming,' he said. 'I didn't know what I wanted to do. As I got closer to pulling the trigger, I looked at all my goals and what I was looking for and everything that I wanted to happen in my development. I felt George Mason was the best fit for me.'"
