DETROIT -- Karmari Newman does not mind admitting when he has an off night.

On Friday night, in arguably the biggest game of the season for Newman and his Detroit East English Village boys basketball teammates, he had one of those off nights - even though it could have been worse.

Shooting 5-for-15 from the field, Newman was 1-for-8 from 3-point range and 5-for-8 from the free-throw line. Although he managed 16 points, it was a far cry from his 42-point performance on Tuesday.

At this point anyone who can shoot the ball from deep is something Mason sadly needs, and hopefully Newman and co, can be a part of that solution.

He'll be a piece of the puzzle. We had a few parts this season. More next and that will reflect in more wins. We'll not be a complete team until year 3 at the earliest.

Not sure it will result in more wins next year. We lose some pretty big pieces as well. But i agree that year 3 is when we should start to see what we have.

Heck of a game by Kamari Newman, already with a career high 12 pts and two dagger threes off of the bench.

Karmari Newman has 12 points for @MasonMBB but Richmond is chipping away down 5 with 8:30 left @gmuhoops

Sneaky fun development this season: Karmari plays great on-ball defense

I'm wondering if Kamari could have the longest range of any shooter we've had at Mason. I know guys like Mike Hargett, Brian Miller, Curtis McCants, Isaiah Tate and Lamar Butler all had good range, but I swear some of the shots Kamari hits are from NBA 3-point distance.

The best part about that is he has also shown lately he can get to the rim, so teams that come out to cover him also have to worry about him going past them. Love the potential this kid has to be a consistent scorer for the next three years.

Donald Ross had no limit to his range. I remember him crossing half court and jacking up shots like it was nothing.

Man, I forgot all about Donald Ross. That guy could get a defensive rebound and throw up a shot in the same motion.

The three point shooting is great but what I'm really excited about with Karmari is how much ability he's shown slashing and driving to the rim. It's easy to find knock-down shooters at the college level but guards who can score at the rim are worth their weight in gold. Karmari's offensive game is really well-rounded, more so than Ian's and maybe even Jaire's at this point. He also fights over screens and plays intense defense on the ball. Absolutely love his game. Another great find by the staff.

He seems to have been overlooked as a high school player; not uncommon in high school recruiting, obviously. But he was the runner up (or at least in contention, I believe) for Mr. Basketball in Michigan. He was known as a very prolific scorer coming in, and it looks like that's going to translate well to D1. His on-ball defense is a cherry on top. I was equally impressed with his defense against UR as I was with his offensive outburst.
