Welcome Karmari Newman

This makes me excited for what Paulsen is seeing out of Green and Grayer in practice if he's willing to grant a kid with Kamari's range his release. It does put a lot of the burden on them for our deep ball though. If we're going as small as we are we're gonna have to hit some three's. And I guess Mar has a deep ball too. Hopefully Grayer doesn't need OOC to get warmed up again this year.

Kier led the team in 3-point percentage last season -- albeit on limited attempts -- and should be better with a year of experience.

Grayer has been a different dude since he started asserting himself early in A-10 play last season. He has a chance to be the best perimeter shooter in the league the next two years.

Plus, it's conceivable that we start the season with a lineup that includes five guys who are a legit threat behind the arc.

Hate to see Karmari go, but I see perimeter shooting as one of the team's strengths, not a weakness.

Love the confidence but I'm not sure that statement is grounded in reality. We were 246th in 3p% last year and 318th in attempts. Sure, the two guys who graduated weren't 3 point shooters, but you're still assuming a lot of improvement from everybody if you think this goes from weakness to strength.

Kier is a guy where I don't think the stats tell the whole story in regards to his shooting. He only took threes when he was wiiiiiiide open and he passed up a lot of open shots. Part of that was due to a super slow release, which I think he said was a point of focus for him this offseason.

Karmari is more of a pure scorer and is never afraid to pull the trigger, which would have made him a great option to anchor an effective bench unit. He also made some fantastic slashing plays and showed a real gift for scoring in traffic. This one really hurts - I thought Karmari had a shot at starting this year to take some of the scoring load off Otis + Jaire.

Hopefully all this means is that Javon and Boyd are kicking a** and Karmari was getting squeezed, despite his natural gifts. As with all transfers I wish him the best and will be rooting for him wherever he goes.

Out of necessity, this team is going to operate in a completely different fashion than it did last season.

We no longer have a big man who can consistently score in post-up situations.

We also no longer have a ball-dominant guard who was better at getting all the way to the rim than setting up teammates.

With our personnel, I will be shocked if we don't rely on spreading the floor, driving and kicking and playing a lot of pick and pop for open 3s.

Yes I'm counting on guys to make improvements. That's a given. But this is a perimeter-based roster and I don't think that's going to change as long as Dave is in charge.

If we don't shoot the ball at a high clip, we're not going to win many games.

So what DP is saying is Greene makes up for Newman's departure? We shall see.

Or it wasn't Dave's decision at all. Maybe Newman just wasn't happy at Mason or his role with the team and came to the decision himself? Guess we won't really know the whole story.

We will never know. But he did play well in his freshman year and you can never have enough shooters so maybe the outside noise got to him.

Maybe playing for DP isn't ez and that's not bad. I'm looking forward to the type of kid he brings in now that he has settled in. Three to give is huge.

Don't get me wrong, I like his game and I'm excited to see the progress DP has talked about, but I don't think he's a consistent 3 point threat. Like Petey said, he wasn't taking a lot of contested 3's. Can he hit them? Sure. But if we start something like Otis/Grayer/Kier/Boyd/Wilson we really only have 2, maybe 3 deep threats depending on how you view Boyd's downtown threat.

I don't expect AJ to take a bunch of 3s this season, but all 5 of those guys would have to be guarded out beyond the arc. When is the last time we fielded a lineup capable of stretching a defense to that extent?

The three best years for DP at Bucknell were 2011, '12 and '13 (Mike Muscala's and Bryson Johnson's soph through senior years). Muscala was a dominant center in the Patriot League and Johnson was the best 3-pt shooter in the Patriot League for those three years (he shot 42% on 3-pt FGs in those three years making 256 out of 608). As Muscala matured, his Bucknell teams relied less on the 3-pt shot (ie, Bucknell was 328th in 3PA% in Muscala's senior year despite having the best three point shooter in the league).

Conversely, DP's first team at Bucknell had very little talent, no real center, and that team was 116th in 3PA%.

In DP first two years at Mason, his teams ranked 265th and 335th in 3PA%.

With the smaller line up and Moore no longer on the team, I can see DP looking to spread the floor and as a result the team's 3PA% will likely go up. I don't expect them to be in the top 100 of teams in the country but somewhere around 150 would not surprise me.
