Kier or no, if we can’t put together a good season with a rotation that includes four seniors and two juniors, it’s time to move on. The question will ultimately be: how does President Washington measure success?

Your last sentence is the ultimate question. What is a good season? NIT? NCAAs?

Given how Mason does things and especially athletics, I can't see him wanting to do anything drastic like get rid of Brad and Dave (and Nyla) but one never knows. That would be a lot of buying out to start fresh. However, if your flagship programs aren't doing well, and you want your own people, next year is probably as good as any to start fresh and try to get things right.

I honestly dont 'know though. Pres Washington is coming from a basketball focused school. Either way the next 12-18 months will paint the next direction for Mason basketball for both the Men's and Woman's programs.

President Washington knows no other. Its succeed or die. Just ask the Brits.

Barring a miracle Nyla is toast after this season. Because Mason won’t have to buy her out, it’s certainly possible to change coaches for both programs at the same time.

Is there a deadline to enter the transfer portal or is it dependent on the situation?

Meaning, player X has graduated but has a year of eligibility left, does she/he need to enter the portal by a certain date in order to be able to play in the fall of 2020 for her/his new team?

Is there a difference between the situation I just described and the following- player Y is a Fresh/Soph/Jr and will have to sit out a year (since the rule hasnt changed yet), does player Y have to enter the portal by a certain date in order for her/his 'sit out year' start with fall 2020?

Yes, but if Nyla sucks again she wont be brought back. The question is, will there be a willingness to get rid of Nyla and Dave? The two of them and Brad? I don't know, but if both programs are underachieving and you are new, it might be the most appropriate time to clean house and start a new.

Seems a bit aggressive for Mason, but anything is possible.

When a strong nucleus formed, staying in Fairfax over the summer to build for something bigger used to be how we got to the dance. Now it's looking for a program to jump to in order to get you there. Millennials are ruining the fabric that builds character. The NCAA is letting it happen. As for Kier, that nucleus is actually forming in Fairfax as we speak. If I'm his agent I'm telling him its better to make A10 First team next year and possibly the NCAA Tourney via Mason, than be a no name, on a shitty P5 team like TCU.

Outside of the A10 or the state of VA (other than coaches obviously), Justin is a no name. If he goes to a P5 then he will get more exposure and play against better competition every time he steps on the floor. That "no name" at TCU started the majority of games, played the 4th most minutes on the team, played better competition and was well respected in the DFW and the Big 12. Would he get more minutes at Mason, probably. Would he score more points at Mason, probably. Will he have a better chance of making the dance, no. Would he get more exposure at Mason, no. Justin is a good player but he is no Obi Toppin. He could be 1st team A10 here but is that going to give him a better chance to play professionally, probably not. It all comes down to what he wants. Either way, I wish him all the best because he represented Mason well both on and off the court.

I don't understand the whole exposure angle here, unless people think Kier is an NBA player. I can understand wanting to go to a team that has a better chance of going to the dance next year (and let's be honest, even if Mason finishes, say, 4th, in the A-10 next year, there's no guarantee that's going to punch your ticket to the dance unless you make the finals or win the league -- and I don't think anyone here thinks Mason is a top 2 or 3 team next year even in the most rosy scenario).

We need to work on the future. If Kier wants to go play the field...go play. We can use his PT next year to see which kids are possible keepers after Paulsen's office gets packed up next year......

Why bother? The ones with other options won’t stay if there’s a coaching change even if you want them to.

And given the pending rule change, even rising seniors (next year) like Miller and Hartwell will be able to leave and play elsewhere immediately.

We would be starting over at square one again. Nobody who cares about the program should be rooting for that outcome.

I simply can’t believe we are losing both Mar and Kier with eligibility left. Somehow, I’m still shocked? I know I shouldn’t be, roster management has been a nightmare.

If you’re able to write this off as “oh well, it happens,” I feel bad for you. We all care way too much to be comfortable with what’s happening. Go get a transfer, I guess, or a kid no one else is recruiting for 2020, I guess, or strategically hold another roster spot....I guess.

Anyone else feel betrayed?

Even with how they smacked us last season, TCU is not some giant step up on the college basketball ladder. They weren’t going to make the dance any more than we were. They’re basically irrelevant in the Big 12.

If Kier’s best opportunity is to be the fourth option on a meh P5 team, he’s far better off being option 1B at Mason.

I feel that Mar left because he needs to go really low level D1 or even D2. He is just not that good. I don't feel betrayed at all and neither should he.

Kier I get what you are feeling but damn you gotta take the love and feeling out of this a little. This is VERY normal now a days.

They need to go out and grab a grad transfer big (there are at least two still out there not heavily courted that would start over Oduro immediately) if one is available and they better not hold onto a scholly this year though.

LOL we wouldn't have won a game in the Big 12 last year. They are a giant ladder ahead of us.. that is how low we are

who wants to come play in front of 4000 fans in a giant arena that has the majority of the attendees just there to see the Green Machine or because they had free tickets? I don't care how much loyalty you expect from these kids, our coach sucks, fans suck and Mason kinda sucks as a school too (not academically). Go snag a scholly at a better school than ours Justin if you want something different. You don't owe nor have you betrayed anyone. #softassfans

You know this based on one game? That’s like me basing a make-believe season on our guys hanging with Dayton until the last minute. Completely meaningless.

Not a DP fan at all but the year Mason went to the Final Four, we lost by 20 at home to Creighton.

The old Fallacy of composition – assumes what is true of the parts is true of the whole. This fallacy is also known as "arguing from the specific to the general."

Look at the 7 footer kid from Drake who just transferred up. Staff finds a kid completely overlooked, develops him into a star, then a P5 comes along, "hey I think we need a big" and he's gone in two seconds. It sucks but Kier wants to go earn money playing the sport some day why stay with a coach likely on his way out when you can play in the ncaa tournament. Betrayed? These kids don't owe us fans anything.
