GIVING DAY 2023
We have to have had more kids leave the program than any other A10 school, even in this age of everyone transfers. Otis is still the only Paulsen recruit to use up all of his eligibility under Paulsen.

id have to see the numbers and what they add up to but I know it’s a lot. That said the last few years it’s calmed down which is more important since the first few years were rebuilding and inevitable to have guys in and out.

We also have a minimum of 4 scholarships for next season already. Why would we need another one in what’s inevitably going to be a rebuild year?

ha yeah, I mean that’s why they need something to bridge the gap but knowing our luck they’ll take another project.

By the numbers we have more transfers than both of those teams over the Paulsen era.

I’d like to see the numbers on that. McCall hasn’t even been at UMass 4 years and he’s already basically flipped his entire roster twice.

GW also has had a ton of transfers.

And I just read a story that Richmond has had 10 guys transfer out over the past 5 years.

But I guess we’re going to use Kier’s decision as a referendum on DP as we do with everything else, so no surprise there really.

I think a lot depends on what Kier wants to do after his college basketball career is over.

If he is looking to continue playing like overseas, I think staying at Mason is probably best. Unless he goes to a low major, he’s going to be more of a focal point in our offense than anyplace else. His numbers here would be better here than anywhere else.

If he’s looking to coach or start working in the real world, maybe going to a power 5 is better. He’s not going to be the focal point like he would be here, but he will get to make more connections and play under a brighter spotlight.

Kier’s game focuses with him having his hands on the ball and driving to the basket. He’s not someone who can stay back and kill you from behind the three point line. I think it will be harder for him to get the freedom to drive at a power 5 than it would if he was a shooter, but some schools out there seem to be linked with every transfer that can walk and chew gum, so I’m sure he will get a shot somewhere.

Lol I mean all of y’all used it as an excuse for why we were one of the worst teams in the league last year, if Kier was supposed to be our saving grace and we can’t even keep him
when we have an open scholarship then something is wrong...

The kid wants to explore his options. I guess DP should lock him away in a castle like Rapunzel and only let him out for practices and games?

I agree with you. His game is getting downhill and finishing at the basket and it might be harder to do that in a BCS league. But theres the other obvious advantages for him to play in a BCS league as well.

My understanding was he wanted to turn pro after this year due to his personal situation, but like with anything, things change.

I hope he finds a way to come back and tear things up in the A10 with Ian and AJ, but I would be very surprised if he hasn't already had phone calls from some BCS programs. He will be a great addition whatever he does.

No but they should have a good enough relationship that he doesn’t feel like he needs to explore his options. If everything was going great in fairfax do you think Kier would have entered the portal?

If I was kier I would totally do the same thing. But as Paulsen says “kier is his favorite player ever” and as you say he dedicated the entire offense last year to an injured player that he knew was injured before non conference play. So it does show a bit to me about the relationship considering I feel doubtful he comes back because he will have suitors. You just can’t use short roster or kier being injured as an excuse again next year. Or the team being young for that matter. They best not keep this scholarship open.

Do you think the new president will accept Kier transferring as an excuse for subpar performance? Me either. It’s put up or shut up time assuming there’s a season in 2020-21.

I think he wants to play in the NCAA tournament and I can’t blame him for thinking he can find a better opportunity to do that somewhere else.

From everything I’ve heard Kier has a great relationship with the staff, but he has to look out for his own interests just like everybody else. He’s going to make the decision that he thinks is best for himself — the rest of this is conversation.

So, the consensus is that DP needs to get to postseason play this coming season or he's out and yet we're also saying that if Kier wants to get to the tourney, he'll need to transfer to another school. God we're in a shitty situation.

When a strong nucleus formed, staying in Fairfax over the summer to build for something bigger used to be how we got to the dance. Now it's looking for a program to jump to in order to get you there. Millennials are ruining the fabric that builds character. The NCAA is letting it happen. As for Kier, that nucleus is actually forming in Fairfax as we speak. If I'm his agent I'm telling him its better to make A10 First team next year and possibly the NCAA Tourney via Mason, than be a no name, on a shitty P5 team like TCU.

Sadly that shitty P5 school beat us 87-53

If that TCU team played us next year, it wouldn't be the same story. More like the K State loss. This is besides the point.

I’m saying I can’t blame him for thinking his best chance is somewhere else. My personal belief is with him this team has a chance to be pretty damn good, but we’ve already established nobody gives a crap what I think.

Actually Jim, I just said the same thing in previous post. We have a good core forming. I am with you on that. Now the coaching situation and x's and o's is up in the air.

Completely agree, without Kier Paulsen is gone after next season. DP realizes this is his make or break season, the extensions are all dried up. Even with Kier I think it’s his last season, all depends on where they finish the season.

If Kier does decide to leave I would hope DP goes after a GT that can give us meaningful minutes or wait until late May and see if the NCAA has gotten rid of the sit one for first time transfers.

Kier or no, if we can’t put together a good season with a rotation that includes four seniors and two juniors, it’s time to move on. The question will ultimately be: how does President Washington measure success?

I know that the option is there for Kier to return to Mason (I hope he does) but would it not be incredibly awkward to walk back in the locker room after all this? Similar to when Justin Fuente bailed on VT for Baylor, only to slump back to Tech and pretend he's all in.
