"2017 George Mason signee PF Goanar Mar was named on March 9th as one of 13 All-American members of the United States roster for the 44th Capital Classic, a high school all star game played every year in Washington, DC. This year’s game will take place on Saturday, April 8th at the Verizon Center."
Damn, impressive roster he's a part of: https://thecapitalclassic.com/unite...culture-capital-classic-to-benefit-the-bgcgw/

I think we are getting a good one, folks.

"The Islander way

Two times a week, the team practices at 6 a.m. before school starts. Academics are a priority.

'Coach is always on us about academics,' Mar said. 'If you’re not taking care of business off the court, you won’t be on the court.'"

Whenever we get to look at an all-star roster and see "George Mason" listed along with schools like North Carolina and Villanova, it's a very good day.

Goanar is going to be great for Mason. Talented, but also has a blue-collar mentality. Perfect fit for Dave.
No kidding. Regarding his blue collar mentality, I stumbled on this earlier (from last summer):

Aside from his emerging skill-set, his defensive tenacity is what sets him apart from his peers. This is an extremely hard working player who will fight to improve as much as he can throughout his college career.

“Gonar is getting 13 or 14 points a game,” D1 Minnesota coach Nick Carroll told Scout. “He guards the best player on every team.”

“I’ve been around some good high-level guys but I’ve never seen a kid that has been as versatile defensively,” he added.

“He blocks more jump shots than anybody I’ve seen. He deflects passes, runs the floor and his skill development [is going well].”

This is a steal for George Mason. If he had one more year of development, I believe we’d be talking about someone universally considered to be a mid 4-star type player.

I'm calling it now. This kid is stealing a starting spot by the end of next year. Depending on transfers in/how Relvao develops I think we end up with two 4's on the court. Something like Otis-Grayer-Boyd-Mar-Wilson. Granted Grayer has to shoot consistently for this to work but it's closer to the traditional style Paulsen likes to play than anything we have.

Both Mar and Wilson are going to push for time from Day 1. It will be interesting to see what happens because both are hungry kids and I know for a fact AJ has had enough sitting and watching this season to last him the next 4 years.

The exciting part is we're gonna go from having a gaping hole at the 4 spot to having 2 terrific young defenders competing for that spot.

Depending on how things shake out, we could also see a lineup with Goanar at the 3 and AJ at the 4 with Troy or Daniel in the middle. That would allow Dave to choose between Grayer, Boyd, Kier or Newman at the 4.

Options and depth! What a novel f*cking concept!

If Wilson is as good at rim protection as we've been lead to believe (from what I hear he's better than anything we had this year) he could be pretty serviceable at the 5, opponent dependent. Maybe not against your Holloway's of the league but certain games having Wilson and Mar holding down the paint would allow for the extra shooter, and I have a feeling Boyd is featuring heavily in Dave's mind for the 3 spot considering he's clearly the heir to the MM22 throne. A little work to do rebounding and driving wise to get there but he's already got a better jump shot.

As great as MM and JJ have been this year, I think we will be a better team next season. Onward and upward... total faith in Paulson

The best part of having a player like Mar come in is, if he is what people are saying about him, he will contribute day 1 and give Mason four years of grit, strength, and perhaps eventual dominance. Game experience is crucial. Hopefully, he acclimates quickly to become a force early in his career and then be an excellent player to build around.

Do you think Boyd is going to play the 3 or the 2? I kind of like to see him guarding the other team's shooting guard, cutting off dribble penetration from the 2 and leaving Grayer at the small forward spot for his added length.

It's interesting to think of Wilson and Mar playing together at the 3 and 4 (which is what I thought might happen originally), because we'll be able to go "bigger" with Otis (or Greene who is a little bigger), Grayer, Mar, Wilson, Relvao or small with Otis, Boyd, Grayer, Kier, Wilson or even go 5 guards if we need free throw shooters at the end of the game with Otis, Boyd, Grayer, Kier, Newman.

Mar and Wilson will give us a lot more roster flexibility going forward.

I mean I would think the 3 but I think the number he plays more refers to offense. Marquis kind of floated from anywhere between 1 and 3 but usually guarded the opponents best player. So I would think Boyd would be a three and his defensive assignment might be opponent dependent. Granted it kind of depends on what you want to define Grayer as. He may pick up the slack in the rebounding department more than Boyd depending on where he's playing. At the end of the day it comes down to whoever is on the perimeter crashing the boards. That's why Marquise was so successful, he wasn't getting boxed out and had a free running start.
