To be fair they don't update rankings much for players outside of their top 100. Mar could have been a 4 star kid at the time and then they just updated it because there was news on him a year later. If he was still a 4 star kid in most coaches eyes he wouldn't be coming here.

I totally get that and I'm not one to put much stock in recruiting stars either. It's just always hard for me to not be a little cynical when a player signs here and then all of a sudden there are another 27 players who are better at playing the position than him.

I care, but only because of the positive impression signing 4-star players can have on the program, both in the eyes of the media, and more importantly in the eyes of other recruits.

Any system that can increase or decrease a player's "rating" based on the prestige of the program he signs with is too damn arbitrary to mean much of anything.

That's exactly why I posted this. The system is broken! He is no different a player, but is taxed for going to an A-10 cellar dweller. People on this board were predicting this after he signed. We've seen it over the years. Like clockwork, he gets docked.

Yeah, I get it's not a huge deal and we can't do anything about it. Star don't matter. But the truth is people do care about them and larger programs do "hit" more.

Just a minor annoyance as a prideful alum.

It's actually pretty remarkable when you think about it, that adults have figured out a way to convince other adults to pay for their recruiting "analysis" and "rankings" of teenage athletes.

What a scam. Kinda wish I had thought of it.

But why do you think this is a good thing?

Because a healthy chip on ones shoulder was something that Larranaga leveraged for years.

Our program thrived when we had a healthy dose of "f you" in our players, and this will give him some of that.

I want to go back to being the team that COULDN'T WAIT to play "high major" teams, so they could beat their a** and rub their noses in it.

When you have a proven foundation you're more likely to play up to your potential. However Mason's program has been rocky the past few years so scouts degrade players who commit to mason because they feel these players are less likely to play to their full potential.

Eh who cares about ratings and stars. Our freshman with the greatest potential right now, Livingston, was barely rated. Paulsen is bringing in the right guys that fit his system. Go back and look at the ranked guys vcu has brought in. Most of them have transferred or haven't panned out as expected.

The core of vcu's Final 4 team, just like ours, was comprised mostly of 2- and 3-star recruits.

Neither program has been back to even the second weekend of the NCAA tournament since.

Yet another reminder that for everyone other than the blue bloods, recruiting rankings don't mean shit.

I agree, recruiting rankings don't mean shit, unless you are a well respected program.

Hard to lump us together with vcu. Yes, neither program has been back to the second weekend of the NCAAs but.. I mean we can't even get out of the A10 play-in game.

Just shows one wrong hire can set you very far back. We'll get back to the promise land though.
