haha they way Georgia Tech fans see it... the fun just begun... and they still haven't recovered from his horrific ending there

They let him hang around way too long. The signs of that program's demise were clear as day, but I guess it took a while for the admin to work up the courage to eat $7.2M.

Our admin should not make the same mistake. The $1.3M we'd pay him to go away would truly be an investment in the program's immediate future.

The way to look at this is we are likely not going to pay an assistant coach moving up to HC more than $350k. So we are really only paying and additional $700k over two years for the buyout of Hewitt. Plus, of course, any buyout owed to his assistants.

I don't know that we want to limit ourselves to paying 350K/year to the next new coach, whoever it is.

Of course, I'll believe we wind up with an assistant coach taking his first HC job when I see it.

If we do, it means that TOC is no longer in the picture.

So what is the market rate for an assistant moving up to a program with some history and playing in a top 10 conference? I, of course, assume this promising young assistant will not have Hewitt's agent and the AD sitting across the table will not be TOC. Otherwise, I could see TOC overpaying again.

I would say close to 500k a year with an immediate bump in the 750-900k range if he does well so he isn't poached right away

Va tech hired James Johnson from the assistant coach ranks a couple of yrs ago. He got a five year deal worth $680,000 annually, the lowest of any current head coach in the ACC. ($245k base salary, $375k retention incentive).

Tough close loss at home vs U VA last night--VT is having another difficult season and has attendance problems--their average is lower than Mason's.

I'm not advocating for him here--but thought it might help address Walter's question on market rate.

I like the low base salary and high retention rate. Makes the buyout much easier. Smart move by the AD. It's like a "show me" clause.

There's enough money, if budgeted, to pay for everyone to be fired. If you look at the incentives we'd have to pay if we won a few tourney games, it's close to 400k. If they budget that amount each year then the money is there. If we don't budget a ncaa tourney or nit run, then there's still 200k in incentives each year. Over 5 years that a million bucks. We are approaching year 3 (600k). I just think the whole cost of firing this regime is a big misconception and more an ego problem for the AD.

You mean loud, obnoxious and intense? I like Ron Hunter from GSU.

Sure that, along with being two of the best coaches in the game. At least we would never have to wonder if the Harbaughs actually have competitive desire lol

Id love to see Hewitt do this on the sideline:

Our George, who art in Mason,
Basketball be thy name.
'Til Kingdom Come, ref's will be done,
In the Pat Center until we're in Brooklyn.
Give us this day our daily missed shots,
And all our duffed layups,
As we give up shots to those who should miss them,
And lead us not to decisive victory,
But deliver us from "Larranaga's guys."

For the Final Four, Ryan Pearson, and the A-10 are yours,
Now and forever.

Amen

How much of a PITA would this law, if passed, be for us?

"The Senate includes an amendment that would cap at $100,000 the amount of general fund dollars that could be used to pay an athletic coach’s salary at a state-funded college and university. The general fund, which comes from tax dollars, is the part of the budget at the discretion of the governor and the legislature. Most of it goes toward services such as education, health and public safety."

I doubt it would affect us much at all. If we had to, we would just raise student fees.

GTFO.....another last minute decision that cost the game. I have no idea how you are as bad as we are record wise, yet the coach is so scared of going for the win in crucial situations and prefers to leave the game in the other teams hands.

So, about that...that might become a little more difficult as well if one of the other amendments passes and gains traction:

“If you choose to have highly compensated coaches … then pay for that out of private donations, foundations and booster clubs,” Norment said. “Don’t be putting that on the backs of students for whom college affordability is an issue.”
Cox said his amendment is a “first step” toward a system that provides a way to measure costs of athletics programs and their affect on affordability for students. He said he was surprised to learn that while only 3 percent of students participate in intercollegiate athletics, 12 percent of student fees go to funding them. “I just thought that there is really a need to look at a way to lessen the student fee portion” of athletics funding, said Cox, whose sons are all involved in athletics."
