The Paul Hewitt Thread

So another hire that TOC knocked out of the park.

But something something about 7 years ago and tournament or something or other...respected and this or that A10 and we all are obsessed with Coach L ergh umm something about were Duke.

Pretty much shows ignorance.

Women were the worst team in the CAA last year and you want to judge the hire midway through her first year in the A 10.

Sure buddy...another bad hire. Ignorance is bliss.

Well, by this time next year, that 52-33 record will probably be getting real close to .500. TOC makes a salary of $275K/yr, which is about $100K more than the URI AD, $15K more than the UMass AD (and both of them have football to deal with), and $35K more than Teague made at vcu. I think we'll manage to attract plenty of great candidates when the time comes.

I think we likely will if we don't can an AD well-respected a few years from retirement anyway.

As much as the last 17 years have sucked with him at the helm.

Just saying. Like Gemini said earlier, add it to the general situation of all sports of late and it's par for the course. I'm thinking more along the lines of the past couple women's coaches and adding Hewitt......Not the greatest run. But I guess that's ignorance.

I'm aware that TOC is close to retirement, and I think it's a good idea if he does that very soon or should be convinced to do so. Unlike Hewitt, I'm fine waiting a year or two for TOC to ride off.

If JP is correct that TOC's contract runs through this spring -- GoMason reported in June 2011 that he was extended for 3 years -- so that seems like it is probably accurate, how many on here would be looking to extend him?

He sold his house and lives in the "campus" housing.

I dont think he's looking for the extension. I think he's looking to get out of town while the program burns to the ground in his rear view mirror.

Extend him? F that noise. He and his "coach" can both hit the bricks.

I think as we look not this season and going completely defeated in the A-10 - Hewitt is gone.

When did he do this? According to Masonvale the longest a person can live there is 3 years. Did he move in 3 years ago?

I just realized the feeling I get from his coaching. I feel like we are being coached by a computer that has every statistic about our team and basketball programmed into it. It has been programmed that you should never leave a time out on the table. It knows which guys have good defensive numbers and which guys have good offensive numbers. It knows all the best strategies. It just can't seem to get those inferior humans to execute what it has calculated is the highest probability rotation for the situation. Unfortunately our computer has not been programmed to understand the human aspect of the game.

So, we are frequently asked in other threads, which of our guys would start on another A10 team. Let's apply that to coaching:

Which teams in the A10 would be better off if Hewitt was their coach instead?

Damn Brian, that's one heck of a question.

Based on my admittedly brief interactions with A-10 fans (other than the vcu jerkoffs) so far, nobody in the conference would take Hewitt over their current coach even if we offered to pay every penny remaining on his deal.

I can't think of one who'd be better off with Hewitt, but that's probably because we're winless and in last place. Anything would represent an upgrade from that.

The timeout thing is mind-boggling and exacerbating. I made the comment at the game Saturday that Hewitt is like Pavlov's dog when we score and are trailing in the second half (which is more often than not). The ball going through the net inspires some kind of subconscious trigger in which he has to call a timeout.

When we have no timeouts left (again, more often than not), I wonder if the assistants have to hold his hands by his side and put a hand over his mouth after we score just to prevent a technical.

Didn't someone get a technical last season because of calling a time out when there were not left because they couldn't get the ball inbounds?
