The Paul Hewitt Thread

I could live with TOC riding into the sunset, provided it's this year or next. As many failures as he has had, he has had some successes to and things are better than they were when he got here. So I can see how we owe him a graceful exit.

But that also probably all but guarantees Hewitt rides out his full five years here. I can't imagine a fresh AD will just come in and immediately start flipping tables over and firing coaches. And this, too, I guess I can also live with, but it will be a really tough 2.5 years as a fan.

If our admin lets Hewitt stay beyond Year 4 without at least a 2-year extension, they'll deserve the recruiting disaster that will ensue.

Gotta crap or get off the pot by the end of next season, at the very least.

Well, I would like to see him fired after this season personally, but I don't think that's likely to happen.

That would suck to have TOC as your roommate. He would be the worst wingman ever. He would resent you getting all the attention and screw it up for you somehow.

You are on fire lately with your posts...

Again, firing a well-respected AD because he made a hire who is 52-33 at George Mason would seem rather stupid to the industry.

It would hurt attracting candidates to the position, actually.

Oh wait, I forgot, this is Duke.

I intend on being at the GW game for the sole purpose of letting Hewitt and TOC know how i feel. I can remember all the great moments we had over the last ten years, under coach L. , storming the court at the Rich col. when we won the conference championship. God , now its all gone. Nothing to look forward to but a dysfunctional group of players who are all lost. Yes, its mostly on the players, but the coach gives them the direction, the tempo, the emotion and the mental edge to win. I feel bad that they are just not getting any of it. No doubt there is so much crap going on behind the scenes with Vaughn Gray not playing, Arledge gone, Marco looks like he's lost, etc, etc.

Don't you love hearing Hewitt praise how good the other team was after each loss. DUH, that's why we hired you? to praise the other team for kicking our a**. Please.
just go back to basics and teach the kids how the game is played. Remember, how involved coach L was in the games, always standing up, whistling to his players, calling plays, investing some emotion so his kids knew he was with them. do you see that anywhere, all I see is a guy waving the players to get down the court.

And finally, please at $40K per game we should expect more. Ill coach the team and lose every freaking game for a lot less.

I would argue the industry of college athletics/academia is stupid, but....I feel like the reputation would be hurt more by firing a guy who was this close to impending retirement.

That was a fun trip down memory lane. I, for one, stand by everything I said on that thread.

I agree with Jollay on this one, there is no case for firing TOC, and might even hinder us going forward. There may be many things you disagree with him on, but, to date it appears to me he has done what I am guessing are his marching orders. I am guessing that is to, first and foremost, run a clean program that is above reproach.

Rehashing the decision to hire Hewitt in the first place seems counter productive to me. No administrator is going to fire TOC based on that. Given Mason's criteria (not saying I agree with the criteria) for choosing a coach, he was one of the better candidates that was available at the time, which was late in the coaching musical chairs season if you recall.

I think what needs to be focused on is how the current situation is handled. If the season goes as I expect it to (3, maybe 4, wins in A10) or even worse, then there is a decent case for doing something. If the contingency planning starts soon, then we are in a better position come the end of the season when the season for coaching changes starts again.

Cirrhosis of the Liver?
Haha

Its crazy going back through some Caazone stuff....then to look at our board and see all the "hows my coaching" and "is it time to put Hewitt on the hotseat" threads and how they are like 40 pages long.

Also funny seeing alot of the same people, saying the same stuff then as they are now....after a few more seasons of bad basketball. Sometimes I wish I could live in delusion like that........

Whatever happened to MasonCAA

He got his law degree and realized a lot of the stuff he was posting here could be used against him in a court of law. (kidding)

I do miss him, though. Some of the best threads on the General Discussion boards were him getting into it with T-Mac, Razor and the other ODU fans.

I have to agree, he had his moments. Unfortunately, everything he produced on offense, he gave up on defense (attracting trolls to our boards). So, I guess he would fit in perfectly right now.

I just read Dick Patrick's "Around the Rim" column about the women's team on GoMason.com, and I found this comment by a fan pretty familiar. With the women being 0-6 in the A10, things are not looking good for either basketball program.

Choosing Milleson was a huge mistake. Missouri State has a reputation, but she was in over her head. Teams were annually in bottom nationally defensively. That's effort. Never won a Valley tournament, Kids quit on her as season wore on. Those were kids SHE recruited. Good luck even when she begins recruiting her own kids there. She had been in Springfield Mo area for years and couldn't get D1 quality kids to play for her.

It is interesting because in all the instances I have seen her and he team interacting, 1 reception and about 5 games so far, I have been impressed with her rapport with the team.

Now, the women's program was already in disarray when she got here, so I am inclined to give her at least as long as it has taken Hewitt to dismantle the Men's team to turn things around.

Well, by this time next year, that 52-33 record will probably be getting real close to .500. TOC makes a salary of $275K/yr, which is about $100K more than the URI AD, $15K more than the UMass AD (and both of them have football to deal with), and $35K more than Teague made at vcu. I think we'll manage to attract plenty of great candidates when the time comes.

You also don't have to fire a guy close to retirement, you just have to nudge him towards announcing a little earlier than he would have otherwise
