GIVING DAY 2023
It's more than just men's basketball performance. The relative health of the majority of our sports is poor.

He failed to secure funding for a practice facility even after Barnes and Noble pledged 1 million to the project.

He has failed to secure funding for the baseball stadium upgrade and that plan is languishing.

He failed to secure private funding for a new stadium roof/scoreboard/PA system, despite the Patriot Center being such a busy and important venue to northern virginia and now we are at the mercy of the Virginia state legislator to approve the project (maybe when part if it collapses during a Maroon 5 concert crushing 20 screaming teen girls will they approve the funding).

The overall marketing and communications strategy across the entire athletic department is poor.

Etc, etc, etc.

We need a new vision and new ideas. And I'm not one who disagrees with the overall philosophy behind some of the decisions we've made regarding facilities either. I think if the AD were smart they could play that message up, instead we get "the side door" comment.

Thanks Gemini, your post really puts it all into perspective.

It's been one failure after another.

But we're just supposed to close our eyes and pretend TOC's record isn't as poopy as it is because he used cronyism to get us into the dance in 2006?

we all know how they feel. They've quit on him. Look at Arledge. Look at Hancock. Look at all of the players the past 3 years. everyone is checked out.
The thing is they have not quit and that shows the character and determination of this team. None of us would blame them if they quit on Hewitt. We have.

Here's some more perspective for you.

My wife and I are top 50 donors to the Patriot Club AND WE GIVE NOTHING.

Wow, three grand a year in an area that has an average salary of what, 55K? That's tremendous.

By the way, before Andy Ruge cornered me and told me what a dirtbag I was (I am) I gave 50 or 100 bucks every three years or so. Never bought season tickets because a friend always had a ticket for me. Spent most of my time coming up with various Internet personalities and then facing them off against each other and downing a bottle of jack each night.

I look forward to our new, energetic AD coming in and reeling in the cash. James Meyer already spends his Saturdays at youth basketball games promoting Mason, working probably 70 hours a week to help bring in the okay crowds we have now; I look forward to that new AD making him work harder, knocking on the doors of Lockheed Martin (all 9 locations in NOVA) and landing those donations. Because perspective.

I have issues with the AD department. To me the baseball project should have happened, it is an opportunity missed. There have been other opportunities missed after the Final 4 (although that starts with recruiting), but the practice facility narrative is complete garbage, and L used it completely as an excuse.

But they have also made strides. I get a great season ticket booklet in the mail, and they were nice enough to mail me a donor plaque. Baby steps. Yeah, I have issues with Pat Center (52 sums up many nicely) but (perspective) look around you even in this upgraded basketball conference. Not too bad, and they're at least working on things.

One coach isn't gonna kill us, Hewitt's recruiting alone means things can turn in a hurry. You want something that can turn things--the wrong AD. Slow and steady progress beats total self-destruction.

How would it make us look if we canned a well-respected guy in the industry (TOC)who is a year or two from retirement because what, his hire Hewitt is 52-33 at George...er, I mean Duke I guess? Are you actually serious with this stuff? At all? Do you think Mason financially is a fire you halfway through by far the most lucrative non-academic contract ever kind of school?

It is clear that from some of the people this comes from are just still mad over L. There can be no other logical explanation.

You clearly don't get that mad at Larranaga leaving and mad at hiring Hewitt are two separate items. Can I not be understanding of letting L walk, but not at the same time be upset that you hired and are paying a record salary to a guy who was paid 7M to leave his previous job?

Does anybody know how much GT paid Hewitt to leave? I can't seem to find that information anywhere, and nobody here has ever mentioned that figure.

Not referring to anyone in particular. Maybe I'll pull some Zone posts as examples.

Of fireable AD coaching suggestions, as well.

F YOU all for not liking the cool automatic beer pourers in the hosp rooms as well.

You know, when people complained and the AD Dept. did something cool about it?

Nope, on to the next bitch, no time for kudos.

Prediction: I have our final record at either 9-21 or 10-20. Which would put us at either 2-14 or 3-13 in A10 play. That might even be a stretch. Wow.

Is the A10 message board authorized to start an "Official Fire Paul Hewitt Thread"? See
http://www.basketballforum.com/atlantic-10-conference/541681-official-fire-paul-hewitt-thread.html.

Wise words from a poster there named Moliva:

"Which of these things is not like the other?

John Beilein
Shaka Smart
Paul Hewitt

I think that Mason will be a valuable member of the A10 but Hewitt needs to go first. It was a terrible hire. Neither Richmond nor anybody else is immune to making terrible hires either. Unfortunately, Mason is dealing with the effects of one now.

I don't think any of this is news to Mason fans either."

It depresses me to go to the A10 boards. Prior to the season, I made posts suggesting our team had been underrated. Ugh. St. Bonaventure fans are making funs of us. St. Bonaventure!
