Towson would have better record than Mason if they were in a10 instead.

So you want us to be on Towson's level? Seriously? That's where we're at.

Pat Skerry was mentioned as an example of a coach, ultimately successful, hired the same year as Paul Hewitt. When I indicated that Hewitt's record in his first 2 years was significantly better than Skerry's (as well as Lonergan's), the comeback was that Hewitt's record was accomplished in an "atrocious" CAA, the same league that Skerry was coaching in. Just making the point that if you are going to discount Hewitt's record for the level of competition, that Skerry is vulnerable to the same criticism.

One of my points was that transitional years may be painful, even when you hire the right guy.

Keep in mind the team/talent/situation that Hewitt came into and the same for Skerry. Skerry took one of the worst D1 programs in the land, infused it with talent, improved and taken it up multiple levels from where it was. Towson is now trending up from their past 5 years or even their past entire existence. Can the same be said for what Hewitt has done here?

Like many have said, most people can take the transitional growing pains if either you have a young/new HC (Skerry) and that you ultimately see progress each game/year and improvement. When a guy with a well known track record of struggles or mediocrity, and lots of experience comes in to a situation that isnt soo much in transition....and you regress more than you improve.....its a different story.

Ian Nolan of College Chalktalk tries to answer the question of what ails Mason ...
It seemed in the fall, back when teams had no records to speak of, that the George Mason Patriots couldn’t have hand-picked a better year to enter the Atlantic 10. Mason was primed to jump into the tougher, more competitive A10 and not miss a beat. But now as the calendar reads mid January, Mason finds themselves 0-4 in the league and losers in nine of their last 11 games. So what’s gone so wrong for this club? There are several areas of concern so we’ll delve into a few.

Interesting analysis, Mason Fanatic. Thanks for posting. So it seems like all we need to do is decrease our turnovers, score more inside, hit more 3s, share the ball better, play better interior defense and get more steals. Once we plug those holes in the boat, it should be smooth sailing.

We probably only have to do two of those things. If we cut down on turnovers and played better interior defense we would have won the majority of our games.

Yep - LaRR
What a disaster.....he's got to go. Period.

Yep - Larranaga got the credit when we were actually good. Hewitt takes the blame when we're awful. I'm tired of the "it's on the players to execute" excuse. A good coach finds a way to make it happen.

Seems like every thread could be called that eventually. No matter what the topic is originally, they all go down the same path in the end.

It's easy to see why at this point. We see the same shortcomings over and over and over again with Hewitt. This team does not play fundamentally sound basketball under Hewitt. Seriously, imagine if this team cleaned up its fundamentals. Played fundamentally sound D, valued the ball like any good team should. How anyone believes that a coach like Larranaga - or any number of coaches out there wouldn't do significantly better than Hewitt is beyond me.

Exactly what I was thinking. I would give our players a generous C- and the coaching staff an F. A decent coach could have won a couple of these games.
