I’m pretty sure I’m going to trust ByG who has connections to the coach, AD, players and staff over Jim who self admittedly “doesn’t make it to many games” and lives 100 miles away in Richmond. Sorry

Nothing said was backed up by quotes from any of those "connections".

Think what you want, Chris.

I know where I got my info and I’m not about to share that here.

No this convo took a turn for the “real.” You just don’t like the message so as usual it’s shoot the messenger.

What’s particularly ridiculous is you now want to blame the coach for playing Otis and Jaire too much as freshmen.

They both knew what our roster looked like when they signed with Mason. And I’m sure neither complained about being able to play 30 minutes every game from Day 1 — in Jaire’s case it was probably a major selling point because he could’ve prepped and had other options.

But now Dave is responsible for hurting them by forcing them to play minutes they didn’t want to play?

Of all the dumb shit I’ve read on this board, that takes the cake. Congrats!

Once again you spin what’s said to fit your DP fan boy stance. Is it coincidence Jaire and Otis broke down late in seasons/their career here? You tell us, you’re the well connected messenger. Weird, your source made an excuse as to why a player was leaving? You also spin the rumors that Kamari smoked weed? Troy was too crazy to maintain? Abram didn’t hustle in practice? You the source for all that too? There’s a common denominator here whether you want to accept it or not.

Y’all don’t need a source, I’m the source...Grayer was injured and was medically redshirted by both the NCAA and A10. Call the guy a quitter if you like but I won’t. This thread was about an open practice in which we got to learn some of what DP plans on doing this year with both scheme and lineups. I thought we’d all like to discuss stuff like that. Instead some of you try to pigeon hole me against DP, although I’ve praised recent recruiting and have never called for him to be fired. But whatever, y’all can believe what you want, trash former players and pretend to know what Brads thinking. Answer me this, is Rueter a quitter too? SMH

In attempt to change the narrative of this thread.......... Miller told me he’s gonna play a lot of the 3 spot while Kier is gone, leaving AJ and Mar to hold down the 4 spot. Does Miller take this spot and run with it? Do we even want him away from the basket given his ability to get his hands on rebounds? Kier being out blows but does open the door for guys and will be a good display of what we can expect next year. I’m torn on this but think the 3/4 positions will be interchangeable and we will really do a good job securing rebounds and loose balls with an athletic front court.

I tried to tell people AJ is starting at the 4 this season, but certain posters want to pretend that I don’t know what I’m talking about.

Regardless, it will be nice to have a
6-8/6-7/6-6 front court instead of having to play 4 guards as a standard lineup.

AJ is also a really good offensive rebounder. Kent Bazemore also played at the 3 and snagged a lot of offensive rebounds from the wing. It really is a question of Will Paulsen let 3 guys crash the boards instead of being conservative and running back after a miss?

I have wanted AJ to start since beginning of last year.. I am glad it is finally coming true. Thank you for your sources

Maybe it's like Marquis Moore....if you can actually go get a rebound...then he says go ahead. If you self identify as a rebounder, but actually perform more like a ball boy....then not so much.....

AJ has to learn to not try and make the flashy play every time. It happened again at the scrimmage, with time running out in the 3rd period (I think) he tried to put-back slam an offensive rebound. He wasn’t in time and I immediately looked at DP who was shaking his head, I can’t blame him.

Miller just has that finesse to his game, will sometimes display power, can step back and hit jumpers as well but routinely finds himself in the right spot making the easy play. If our young guys all buy into and follow Miller’s style, we’ll be in good shape. It’s pretty clear, we’re gonna play with more tempo and I think we have the roster for it.

Does it matter? You'll still say in two years Paulsen played him out of position...

This is spot on. AJ needs to learn to consistently hit singles and doubles like Miller does and take home runs when they present themselves. It’s playing with energy and athleticism but balanced with staying under control. If AJ can do that, he will be a monster.

The same guys that say I don’t ask tough enough questions in pressers are the same ones that say I hate DP.

You ever think the reason I ask softball questions sometimes is because I genuinely like DP and want him to succeed, want to give him an easy question he can expand on probably hyping up players? Yes, I will also question plenty like roster construction, in game schemes etc. I appreciate the back and forth with Jim because he can call me dumb and I can call him a fan boy and then we can agree on something 2 minutes later. He understands the amount of work our platform does, whether we agree or not is the fun part.

Players have been forced into positions they probably shouldn’t have played. I’m sorry, blame whatever you like. I still find Miller’s involvement very important, where do you think he’ll thrive the most, Mason32?

Spoiler: we provide plenty of DP hype on our social media platforms.

I'll admit to still being a little leery about that. He's always been able to run and jump, but I've never seen him actually be very good at basketball.

I would LOVE if he made me look like an idiot and showed off a well rounded game, and court awareness, and bbiq, but I will believe it when I see it.

So apparently, it’s a radical idea that the McKay family who spends millions on the program expects on the court results.
At the risk of being accused by Jack Strop of sounding "resentful and bitter", I'll give you a data point from the past:

I spoke to Kathy at length at the tail end of the the Virus' 3rd year about his coaching. She showed no interest in expressing dissatisfaction with the coaching situation or pressuring the AD for a change. She was perfectly happy to sit side court and yell at the refs and see her name on every other promotion. I haven't spoken to her much since then, so i don't know if things have changed or not.

I talked to a lot of the larger donors at that time that sat in the floor section opposite the team benches. I would put the bulk of them in one of two categories:

1. Donors that have a business relationship with Mason. While it would help the value of their investment in Mason (advertising and sales of goods and services to Mason) for the team to do better, it would risk their business relationship with Mason to try to exert pressure on the AD. The latter far outweighed the former.

2. Long term supporters, like before the old Cuban man's time. Most of these people would not say a bad word about any Mason coach publicly or privately if their life depended on it. They'll go down with the ship even if it has obvious holes in it.

Regardless, there is no logical case for getting rid of Paulsen. There are just as many arguments to keep him. I'd be surprised if there were more than the few people on here and a few on twitter saying much, if anything, negative about Paulsen. I doubt the AD is hearing a lot of complaints. If the virus could not generate an uprising of the fans, there is no way that Paulsen's current record is going to make any waves at all with our fanbase.

It's sort of a basketball truism that if you have a guy who is between positions, more often he'll be better at the bigger of the two positions.

That is, it's better to be a smaller but quicker than average than it is to be bigger but slower.

Now, Miller I actually don't think is between positions. I think he's a natural 3. That said, I'm not wedded to that idea, and the idea of him as a small 4 doesn't bother me.
