Same here. vcu got an upgrade the past three times they hired a coach. Shaka > Grant > Capel
Our history: Hewitt < Larranaga > Westhead = Nestor < Barnes > Harrington
I think when the new coach comes in and the first game we play if there is rotation on defense, passing the ball, and team play, the team will get a standing ovation at the first media timeout. I believe so.
He recruited these guys. He is the one leading practices. So, why is he having so many problems, the same as he had at GT, that successful coaches don't seem to be having? So, either he recruited a bunch of defective players (I don't think so, but that would be his fault too) or it is his coaching. If it was just one or two guys on the team, maybe, you could concluded it wasn't Hewitt. But, since it is the entire team, it is all owned by Hewitt at this point. While I certainly believe that Hewitt needs to be replaced no later than the end of this season, IMO there are two sides to this story. While it's evident that Hewitt has significant deficiencies as a coach, I also believe that the players are deficient in their execution and shooting skills. And, if they have a tendency to lose focus during practice as Hewitt says, then perhaps he needs to lock them in the gym all night until they get things right.
I know that Jollay says I'm too surly on this board. But, how about what Lamar Butler is tweeting and saying during the broadcasts?
With the exception of Thompson, these guys have been playing this game for a long time. IMO, they need to start playing like they belong in the A10, irrespective of the deficiencies of their coach.

Still not buying it. Again, if it was just one or two things, or one or two players, or on a rare occasion, I'd hold the players more accountable. If I heard that they were not putting in the effort in practice or not doing their individual workouts, I'd hold them more accountable.Actually, I never wrote that Hewitt wasn't at fault. Rather, I'm holding Hewitt & the players accountable. And, I fully expect the players who return for the next coach will learn quickly that continuing to execute poorly will result in a permanent seat on the bench.

All reports, though, are that the players are working hard and, yet, just about everything that could go wrong is going wrong. When that is the case, it is mostly, if not completely, on the coach.

I've always thought that I was in great..er, uh goo...ok...just average company. You're just too surly to be my #1 favorite most constructive poster, but I think you should continue to s (C) url at people in general.
Most of the people on here are certified morons, including myself. It is enough to make anyone surly.

Maybe but looks like he isn't that great in the regular season but managed to win the conference tourney twice recently to get into the NCAAs.Jeff Goodman of ESPN brought an interesting name to my attention with a tweet last night. Will Brown from Albany. He has won his league 2 years in a row now and has his team at 8-0 again. I did a little more research. Albany has won its league 4 times in the last decade. He has a roster of kids from all over the country and the world. It is obvious he can coach and recruit. He is coming from the same league that produced Mike Lonergan who turned around GW so quickly.
Pardon my ignorance, but, are you saying vcu's success is primarily recruiting. Isn't vcu running a system of sorts, e.g. Havoc?I've said before, and I'll say again, DESPITE vcu's SUCCESS, the most reliable way to compete/win as a mid-major is to be a system team.
They are, but I think their success has been from recruiting. Eric Maynor and Larry Sanders started their program, Bradford Burgess continued it, and now they've turned a recruiting corner.Pardon my ignorance, but, are you saying vcu's success is primarily recruiting. Might be the first year w&m makes the ncaa. I kind of feel like he has to make it this year to be considered. Just seems like with a weak CAA this year he should be able to accomplish itThat said, I still like Tony Shaver a lot. His team put up 100 points against a good Hofstra team the other night, and they were crushing JMU in Harrisonburg last time I looked.
Shaver would have a field day with finally being able to recruit the type of athletes he's been mostly limited from bringing to W&M.
His preferred brand of basketball when he was at Hampden-Sydney was up tempo offense and full-court defense, but he's had to adjust because the guys he can get into W&M really can't excel in that type of system.
Bottom line, he's an excellent coach. But I'd still rather have Cherry or Spiker.
