I wouldn't consider a move to an A-10 school with a final 4 in the past 10 years in a major metro area a "lateral" move. Coach L proved success is there for the taking at Mason, you just gotta earn it. It'd be a step up for a lot of talented, young coaches in this country ready to prove themselves.

Yeah sorry for the bout of self-loathing.

Phil Martelli is well above .500 at St. Joes, has 6 NCAA tournament appearances (including a 7-6 record -- with an Elite Eight and a Sweet Sixteen) and 6 NIT appearances for them in that time span. I don't think you can compare his record there with Hewitt's here.

And yes, I know a lot of that success came in the early 2000s, but they did reach the Round of 32 last year, and went to the NIT in the previous two years. So it's not like he's just sucking wind over there.

Scott Cherry and High Point improved to 13-4 on the year. Check out the quote below...can't remember the last time our 'coach' could say something similar:

Our guys did a great job of sticking to the game plan. We had five guys in double figures and we did an unbelievable job defensively," head coach Scott Cherry said. "They're a very good basketball team, and our guys came out focused and took a huge step coming out in the second half to expand the lead. This is a great league road win."

Only question is whether he'll need a stop at the A10 level on his way up the ladder. At this point Buffalo to Mason feels a lateral move.
This may seem crazy, but I think Mason in the A-10 is a sleeping giant. We have a beautiful campus with fairly vibrant student life. The Pat Center is still one of the best arenas in the A-10. And the Atlantic coast, including the DMV, is a hotbed of basketball talent.

We are not going to be able recruit top talent in the DMV or Atlantic coast anymore if the program continues to be a bottom dweller. We are not the only school recruiting in these areas. Paul Hewitt's silver tongue is starting to rust, time for him to go.

If possible Mason should try poaching one of the assistants in the ACC for the head coaching job. Someone mentioned two of them from UVA which is definately doable.

Going from RI to Mason would be a lateral move and wouldn't make sense. I would be interested in Bobby Hurley though who's currently at Buffalo. I think his name has been already mentioned somewhere on this thread.

Can we at least wait for him to finish half of one good season before we anoint him a good coach? His record at Rhodey is like 24-40.

Hurley did a really good job at Wagner, which got him the Rhody job.

URI was absolutely in the toilet when he took over -- way worse than where our program currently stands, in fact -- and Hurley has them in the RPI top 100 in his third season.

I don't like his whiny bitch act on the sideline, but he is a good coach.

His brother would be an intriguing choice if he'd come to Mason.

Watching Davidson roll Dayton. Davidson is a well coached team...don't need a hot assistant out of a power 5 conference...give me Shaver from W&M.

The question is, do we really want to run the Princeton offense here?

Trying to run the Princeton offense with our personnel might be an even bigger goat f*ck than what we currently have.

(So while I've never actually seen goats f*cking, I guess I'm voting no.)

Well, I have had it described to me that when male goats are in heat they piss on their own faces to attract the females by literally sticking their faces in between their legs into the urine stream (the more piss the better apparently). That sounds about right for our current offense, don't you think?

Well, this thread certainly has taken a bizarre turn. I credit the influence of Jollay.

GMU Gemini is easily the best poster on this forum. Could be Pablo, but he gets so surly sometimes. Don't blame him, when I'm his age I'm going to make him look like James Baskett. (no one will get that reference w/out Google)
