Looking at Apex's games, it doesnt look like they are in a very tough league. Even their starting lineup besides Boyd looks rather weak, short and....well....pale. Not trying to say Boyd wont be good at the next level...

Are you serious with this comment? They are in 4a which is the largest schools in NC. All 4 teams that made the state tournament from the SWAC, the division Apex is in, won their opening round game. Two of which were upsets based on seeding. Also, Apex starts a 6'7 Jr at C, who will be a stretch 4 in college. I'm not sure how much more size you are expecting to see in the public school ranks.

How would they compare to rosters on Dematha or Gonzaga? Even watching Ahmad Gilbert last year at Constitution HS.

The D.C. Catholic league is probably the best HS basketball conference in the U.S. If not, it's certainly on the short list.

There are no public school leagues in the country that compare favorably.

But I wouldn't worry about Ian being overmatched in the A-10. He'll just be a little less like a man among boys.

Honestly I didn't think Gilbert looked that great for his hs highlights. His shot wasnt't pretty or smooth and he didn't look very athletic. I still hope he has a solid college career but I didn't see him as a star.

Is it also not a little strange that Mason landed the best basketball player in the state of North Carolina? Any idea why Ian doesn't have 10-15 offers? NC is a basketball powerhouse, winning POY in one of the best areas for basketball is a YUUGE honor.

Everyone thought he was going to go to Virginia Tech to play football and he pulled a switcheroo on them and decided to come to Mason to play basketball. And to that, we can only say thank you.

Not exactly a state, but Patrick Holloway was Player of the Year and All-Met when he was a senior (as was Kevin Durant!).

He could have been a very good player at Mason, too, if he was coached by a staff that knew what it was doing.

It's sad to think of the disease Hewitt spread to some players who had great potential here.

I just moved to Raleigh a few months ago and my only regret this far is not making time to drive 20 minutes over to Apex and watch him play.

Some context...Boyd won the North Carolina Basketball Coaches Association (NCBCA) "Player of the Year" award. There are other similar awards like "Mr. Basketball North Carolina" awarded by the Charlotte Observer. I'm not super tuned in, but I'd imagine getting nominated by the coaches makes this award quite the distinction. Check out the impressive list of past recipients...

NCBCA Players of the Year
15/16 - Ian Boyd (Apex) - George Mason
14/15 - Brandon Ingram (Kinston) - Duke
13/14 - Brandon Ingram (Kinston) - Duke
12/13 - Isaiah Hicks (J.F. Webb) - UNC
11/12 - Denzel Ingram (Chapel Hill) - UNCW
10/11 - Terry Whisnant (Cherryville) - FSU
10/11 - C.J. Harris (Mt. Tabor) - Wake Forest
09/10 - Ty Walker (New Hanover) - Wake Forest

Happy to defend Hewitt here. Blame him for not nipping some if these problems earlier, but PH proved without a doubt this year the trouble with him extended well beyond Hewitt.

Would PH even have ended up playing under Larranaga, with his emphasis on defense?

Would the emails psychotic family members may have or may not have sent to Hewitt been any different to another coach?

I tend to agree with Jollay. I think if the old staff had been here PH would have lasted maybe a year and then transferred out.
