Ian Boyd commits to Mason

Happy to defend Hewitt here. Blame him for not nipping some if these problems earlier, but PH proved without a doubt this year the trouble with him extended well beyond Hewitt.

Would PH even have ended up playing under Larranaga, with his emphasis on defense?

Would the emails psychotic family members may have or may not have sent to Hewitt been any different to another coach?

Damn right!

In fact, I blame the parents of every player - especially Luke Hancock's. Coach Hewitt just needed a little more time and a couple more athletic wings recruited and his master plan would have taken bloom.

The writer annoys me. Why refer to Boyd as a "recruit"?

Is it too early to project that in addition to his offensive skills, Ian Boyd will be an outstanding defender like former Mason guards Ahmad Dorsett, John Vaughan, & Isaiah Tate?

I'd add on his muscle. I can't think of anybody in the A10 other that Mo Alie Cox at vcu (in his 9th season there) that could out muscle Ian.

Isn't alie cox also like 5 inches taller? The kid played great but you really don't think there is anyone in the A10 that is years older that has is bigger and stronger? Jalen Jenkins might be stronger lol

Fair point. Maybe I'll amend my post to say few non-post players will match his strength.

Ian is built like a linebacker. Physically he reminds me of a beefier Bryan Allen, and Bryan was an incredible specimen. Ian seems to have great instincts for jumping passing lanes and disrupting the offense.

He also had 13 points on one made field goal last night. How often do we think that happens?

So far this season he has the best assists to turnover ratio (7/3) of anybody on the team and has 7 steals which is second on the team (Otis has 8). Given the limited number of minutes he's played, that's quite impressive. Definitely a keeper.

I think that he could have effectively played linebacker, wide receiver, safety, or tight end for a major program. Fortunately for us, he liked football but loved basketball. BTW, he was also the backup quarterback on his H.S. team.

I suppose this is as good a place as any to post this without starting a new thread. I've been perusing the kenpom site. He has an offensive efficiency rating for every player which even he says is based on a "complicated" formula which he references but doesn't define (I'm presuming that 100 is good or at least average. Anyway, of the usual starters, Mason's top rated players are:
  • 116.6 Jenkins (only Mason player ranked in top 500 at #472)
  • 110.2 Livingston
  • 103.8 Moore
  • 90.2 Grayer
  • 89.0 Kier
Although he's listed as a "limited roles" player, Boyd is at 105.2! For comparison sake, Temara, our other player listed in a limited role is at 68.5. Newman is at 87.6 and Abram 80.4. Might explain part of the reason Abram isn't getting playing time.

It is fun to go back and watch Boyd's football highlights and marvel at how the game was almost in slow motion for him. I look forward to the future when the game of college basketball looks so effortless to him.

That man is an incredible athlete, WOW!

But it makes me think he's having fond memories of football.
I really hope he isn't reconsidering football. We need him.

Football is pretty unique in that it is a sport which you can always go back to if you have the talent. In fact, you may have an edge because you took a few less years of hits. So hopefully Ian will have a great career here, and then if he doesn't get a good basketball contract, he will then go work out with some NFL teams.

Let's hope this Dick Patrick column foretells Boyd's future performance better than his last column did on Murrell!
