Mason should build a multi purpose stadium like Richmond's E. Claiborne Robins Stadium. Track/football/soccer/lacross

Just build a bigger version. It only cost them 28 million and it holds 9k. Can't wait for the rest of tbis forum to shut this idea down

Eh not opposed to pairing up soccer and lacrosse but more than two sports on one field usually isn't great. The turf that football uses is atrocious for soccer. Plus a track running around a field always just makes everything seem so distant. I like the new soccer stadium renderings. It'll get DC United to play their Open Cup games there and bring in some $.

Richmond's football stadium is beautiful. I've been to a couple games there and loved it.

That said, we have no need for that caliber of stadium because we're not going to have football any time soon, if ever.

We can't even afford to adequately fund the teams we already have, much less add the most expensive sport available.

If that qualifies as "shooting down" the idea, so be it.

What don't we fund right now that we need to? (Outside of basketball)

I would agree that we should focus on the sports we have now, but to say we don't fund the ones we have adequately is stretching it. We have increased the number of endowed scholarships and are making investments in facilities now. I do think the big thing that needs to be done before football is the basketball practice facility. Which has been put in the plans.

The investments in the baseball, soccer and track fields is only going to improve that curve.

Once those things are done we can plan football.

I'm not sure what we "need" to fund, but the last I saw our total athletic budget was in the bottom half of the A-10.

Our athletic fundraising historically also has been mediocre to bad, although I'm hopeful that is changing with Cabrera and Edwards in charge.

My contention is that unless you are giving your existing programs the money they need to compete consistently at the top of their leagues, you shouldn't start another that will require you to basically double your athletic budget.

I'm sure many will disagree.

I'm just trying to figure out what we could spend money on outside of facilities if all of the athletes are on scholarships already. Higher salaries to entice better coaches?

Are student fees flat regardless of instate/out of state? Like if Mason admits an extra thousand students next year does the athletic portion of student fees get evenly distributed among athletic programs?

Salaries, recruiting budgets, facilities are three areas that immediately spring to mind.

Also cost of attendance stipends, which are being paid only to men's and women's basketball.

vcu can afford to give stipends to all of its scholarship athletes. We should aim to do the same if we're serious about competing in all sports.

What exactly is that? Sounds like a payment but obviously it isn't or the NCAA would be having its way with us.

Also, do we know where in the process that patriot park soccer facility is?

I'll be that guy. Your only problem is Richmond doesn't have a men's soccer program or track team.

NCAA has authorized schools to pay stipends to all scholarship athletes, but we're only paying the 13 men's and 15 women's basketball players.[/QUOTE]

I think there is a difference in can afford and not willing to pay for.. I think we always been able to afford but previous administration was reluctant to spend.

Hi, my name is Chris Jollay. I currently substitute teach and work PT govie contracts. I am a top 50-100 individual donor to Mason athletics last five years in a University of 30,000.
You change that sentence, first, then these discussions make a lick of sense. But I think 5-10 years from now Edwards is the kind of guy that can rewrite the book.

You aren't wrong. It's a matter of two approaches. On Roberts individual properties could be purchased and used because they sit on enough land. The University would have to purchase the land on University Dr because of the sheer number of properties that would need to be cleared. Also there would be A LOT of pissed of neighbors over there. Denser area than Roberts.

Even better - they get pissed off and move selling cheap - wash rinse repeat.

I'd be a bit nervous about greek row directly across from the police station. Seems like a recipe for ending up with useless greek houses like UMD. It's better than nothing but I feel like if some of the fraternities could cooperate Roberts would be a great option because a few of those houses sit on enough land for ~5 fraternities to build on.
