Game 34: CBI Game, Loyola University, Wednesday, March 15th, 7 PM, NO TV

Preferred Walk-On
I was at the game - lots of missed lay ups and shots they normally hit just did not go down. I think Grayer came to play and Otis picked it up in the second half. Watched the post game interview and the Coach said in hind sight it was a mistake - but I get what he wanted to do with this young team which was to keep practicing and working on next year. I can't fault him for trying. I think the guys were tired well before this game.

I think we take a step forward next year - I know others think we go back slightly. I think with the all the play time - Otis and Grayer continue to improve and have a strong Jr year. Our freshman logged a bunch of minutes this year and I think they will have strong sophomore seasons. The big gap in the line up is replacing Jaylen. Paulsen used the second half of this game to see what that looks like. I won't be surprised if GMU picks up a Grad student or if we pull a page out of Dayton's book a few years ago and play 5 guys with no true 5 (played that way last night towards end of the game) OR maybe our two returning centers work really hard over the summer and the light goes on.

Top 4 teams in the A-10 this year lose some of their big time players with vcu losing 5 so we aren't the only program questioning how do replace great talent like a Moore and a Jenkins.

Glad I was out of town for this one. As much as people are justifiably concerned about our lack of an experienced big man next season, I'm just as worried about our lack of a shooting guard. Kier showed me nothing consistently to convince me he's the guy, and I'm not sure Newman is consistent enough on either end of the court to win that spot. Boyd will be a good candidate to replace Moore's penetration, but again he's not a great shooter yet.

Granted, guys will improve from their first to second year, but is anybody here really confident that we have a great 2-guard on this roster or coming in?

Boyd, Kier and Newman were freshmen playing spot minutes behind three very good guards. Given that, I would say all of them showed enough to have me excited for the next three years.

Not concerned at all about their shooting, which will improve dramatically as they continue to acclimate to the speed of the game.

I also think we'll be able to get a truer read on our guards when one of them isn't constantly having to defend an opposing team's PF and forcing all sorts of crazy adjustments.

After an offseason in the weight room and working on individual skill development, I think we have a chance to have one of the deepest and best backcourt groups in the A-10.

Just my $.02.

Def not but we didn't eat $50K to be in it. Attendance was 1,400 so that's roughly $28K right there.

Operations costs are not cheap. And you can't count students and the band as attendance because they don't pay

I was obviously mistaken when I posted that the Patriots should continue playing after the loss in the A10 tourney quarterfinals.

Always great to get a post season road win against a school that has this banner hanging in their arena. Way to go @LoyolaMBB @CBITourney

I see things like this, and it just blows my mind.. Obviously a long standing tradition is going to bring in boosters and tons of cash. But as a previous poster mentioned, Basketball is our anchor sport.

Everyone called me crazy when I said hand the basketball team the RAC. You all said that's to much, but the Clemson team's room is to much. It appears to me that the RAC is just right haha. But either way Mason needs give/build something for the basketball team. IDK the answer to what that is, but please give them anything they need.

Before you say anything, I do plan on going to a lot more games next year, this year was a little hetic planning a wedding and building a house.

Not confident, but I have hope. Greene keeps lighting it up at the high school level. He has an opportunity to be a day one contributor. Not saying he will be, but he has the opportunity. Also Mar and Wilson seem to have a nice stroke, Yes they play more as a wing, but it still gets the same job done.

I just cant wait until next year.

Jim, I'm with you that all three did have many great moments and games this year. And, as I previously stated, I think all will benefit from the experience of playing this season and will improve over the next few years. I'm just projecting whether we have an all-conference caliber backcourt player on this roster or one coming in, especially since the A10 is such a guard-driven league.

Boyd worries me the least, because he's not afraid of anybody out there; and I think Newman will become a double-threat once he adds some more muscle and can drive the line with more strength. Kier is the one I think the jury is still out on. He does, as Gemini said, have a very slow release, and he played very tentatively this year (hence so many games where he'd play 30 minutes and only take 4 or 5 shots).

The great thing is I really think Dave believes in all 3 of them, so I don't see them getting recruited over like last year's class. I don't see Kier starting next year at the 3 (although he could replace Moore at the 2), but I do see a valuable role for him in the rotation with Boyd and Newman.

I like our guys, but collective outside shooting among them could very well still remain a potential problem.

Amazing some of them hit at a clip they did from three--didn't seem like it.

If we only had a basketball facility where players could practice 10pm-6am. I can't help but think they would be a lot better at everything if they could do that. Also if they didn't sleep or study or chase girls either.

That may have been the worst I've ever seen the team play, including the Hewitt years. They seriously looked like it was the very first time they had ever been on the court together. I feel bad that Moore and Jenkins ended their careers that way. I'm going to drink a lot today watching the NCAA tournament to hopefully have a significant enough black out to eliminate last nights semi-sober memories as well.

Valid points but I think Kier's role this year was to be less of a scorer and more of a ballhandler, help facilitate the offense and play defense. While he does have a slow release (I think that will improve, or he will have to figure out a way to make space for himself), he does pick high percentage shots and usually makes them. Going forward he may be asked to score more depending on how things shake out, but like you said he still has a valuable role on the team. He is a smart player so while he doesnt fill up the stat sheet, having him in the game is only going to help.

As far as the guard play in general, I have no doubts that with time and development all the guards will have roles like you said. I think Boyd has a chance to be really good if he can shoot at a consistent clip (which of course as a freshman isnt going to happen), but that really goes for all of them.

Damnit Tom you made me actually discuss basketball on here :crazytongue:

Maybe it's me but I feel like Boyd was pretty good from beyond the arc to start the year and faded off. Last night he was taking shots from 4 feet behind it and wasn't setting himself. He had one foot way ahead of the other. Looked really unnatural.

You realize that facility is for football, right? Used for a team that can have over 100 players on its roster at any point during the season. The AD is renovating the Cage Gym, upgrading the EBA locker rooms, and raising funds to build an addition onto the RAC that will only be used by the basketball team. We don't need a 150,000 sqft facility for a basketball team. New gym, new courts, new lockers, new meeting/training areas with 24/7 access will get the job done.

Everything looked unnatural. Clearly we gave it our all in Pittsburgh and had nothing left to give last night but the general lack of any drive or motivation was a tad concerning but certainly not a real issue. I felt bad for the fans that spent time/money on watching that live. Seemed as if only Otis really cared to play and he was doing so with an injury. He had one leg compression pant on but by the end of the game, I noticed some dried up blood all around the knee, most likely just a cut or something minor due to the fact he never favored it during the game.

We know. It wasn't meant literally. It's just to show what overdoing it looks like. A slide, bowling alley, and miniature golf course aren't necessary. It's so above and beyond what we need I thought it was obvious. When the basketball team makes $83.5 million/year like Clemson football we can talk about having a Nike store and Gatorade bar at our practice campus.

Kier played hard, too.
