Every close game this team has won this year has been because of guard play down the stretch but I guess your right because DERRRR SIZE!

When Kier, Mar, and Greene are getting outmuscled for rebounds, which lead to 11 second chance points in the last 5:00 minutes of a tightening game, going small might not be the best solution? I don't think anyone is suggesting that Calixte is in there with 2:00 minutes remaining and us inbounding the ball, but maybe an offense-defense substitution similar to what SJU's coach was doing with Funk?

All I was saying is, if we didn't give up so many second and third chance opportunities to SJU down the stretch, this game would have never gotten close, and I think that largely had to do with the fact that our guards were in there trying to get rebounds in spots where a 5 normally would dominate (like right under the basket).

This conversation is silly. Dave said something once about how basketball is positionless now and suddenly size doesn't matter anymore. Fact is he went small down the stretch against La Salle and went small down the stretch again against St. Joe's and that lineup got M U R D E R E D in both games. If I have time I plan on parsing the play-by-play data to see exactly how bad it got outscored. Should be in this week's write-up if I get to do it. Also going to see if it had anything to do with coughing up big leads to Fordham and Richmond.

I understand he wants free throw shooters on the floor late in games. I get it. I don't blame Dave one bit for trying that lineup in that spot. I do believe that we've proven conclusively the small lineup can't get stops in crunch time and to see it again in a similar situation would be negligence. Hide Greg under the opposite baseline or something. Do offense-defense substitutions like Martelli was doing with Lodge and Clover. But the small lineup gives up way too many easy shots, and when they do force a miss they allow too many offensive rebounds. (Just so we're clear, I'm calling the small lineup any lineup that has both AJ and Calixte off the floor. Goanar is a poor defensive rebounder and can't defend 5s in the A10.)

On a better note - that "We are headed to... oh no!" call gets funnier every time I hear it. GK made an "Oh no!" button that is freaking awesome: http://giantkiller.co/ohno/

Is the “size” convo not over yet? WE CHANGED OUR STARTING LINEUP.. and it worked. Praise Jesus we made that switch as Boyd is starting to look super comfortable off the bench. Luckily, I get to ask DP a lot of questions, some of which he’s probably tired of hearing, but if he goes small again I’ll ask him about it in the presser. It’s not to say that I know more, I’d just like to hear his answer.

You substitute players offense for defense and vice versa. Coaching 101. Calixte is in to play defense and you sub him out when we have the ball so they can't foul him.

Calixte and other freshmen outside of Mar had no business starting day one of the season. Calixte was and still is the rawest guy on the team. He progressed so luckily Mar didn't have to battle bigs by himself but you're acting like it was some sort of strategic coaching move. Yes, the starting lineup was changed and it's not to say our interior defense and rebounding changed much. Boyd is averaging more offensive rebounds per game than Calixte is at this point anyway. Honestly I don't understand how you can be so close to the action and be this clueless.

I think you may be the clueless one lol. Who is talking about offensive rebounds? Have you watched the Fordham, LaSalle and St Joes games?!?! We went small in all 3 of them the last 3-5 mins and guess what the other team scored at will inside and got offensive rebounds. A lineup of Otis, Jaire, Justin, Boyd and Goanar is probably not going to get a lot of defensive stops or defensive rebounds.... That is the point of what @By George. and others are trying to convey. I agree with that fact since it has happened three times... Yes, Calixte had no business starting the first day of the season. But he has proven he can rebound and play decent defense inside.

In addition to redounding and FT shooting, another thing that needs to be considered about Calixte is his tendency to foul.

He's a good defender but sometimes is overzealous and fouls unnecessarily and when ahead late, you definitely don't want to do.

All of a sudden we’re talking about offensive rebounds. Calixte clears the paint and allows others to clean up. Big Haiti started game 12, not like he had that much time to get acclimated to D1 play. It was a strategic coaching move and I give DP credit for it, it probably wasn’t easy telling one of the two sophomores he has left that they now have to come off the bench. I’m not even sure what we’re arguing at this point but I think it’s fairly clear there is enough of us wondering what DP sees in the small lineup to close games out. Sure, we have assumptions and some are probably right but why would I assume when I could just ask him? Ok fine, we’re clueless.

we might be overstating Calixte's case, but we gave up 13 points to layups and second chance points in the last 5:44 of the game when he was subbed out for good. With better interior defense, maybe we don't give up quite as many?

I don't know if I would call Calixte raw. But I remember one of the assistant coaches said Calixte arrived at Mason out of shape. I assume that's why he didn't start day one.

I agree! Lets ask Dovid

Dear Dovid

Would you call Greg Calixteee raw? Why did he show up to Mason out of shape? I make stuff up about players, just like when you bragged about Troy Temara, but I wanted to ask the question anyway. Can you confirm thats why he hasn't started since day 1?
