The patriots have to get Marcus Santos Silva in foul trouble early. If mason does it then vcu can't play inside out and becomes a 1 dimensional team.

Neither douglas, mobley nor gilmore has effective enough post up game to make opponents sag off and double team.

vcu offensive efficiency is very dependent on MSS's presence in the middle.

I'm worried about MSS. Kid is very legit. One interesting thing is his assist rate is really bad (6.6%). Doesn't seem to be a great passer out of the post, so maybe not as well suited to handle the double teams that are coming to him. We'll force the ball out of the post per usual.

Also worried about turnovers. We haven't played many high-pressure teams so our turnover rate might be fake-good. Otis, Justin, and Javon can all be a little loose with the handles. Excited to see how many minutes Hartwell gets and how he does.

Is Silva quick at all or slow? At times Reuter is slow moving but he hedges the opponent out and recovers quick which is good when the other players rotate. If he’s slow I could see Mason trying to screen and get him to try and recover to foul (something like that. I’m no coach). Of course they could always just give it to Reuter and have him try to draw a foul too especially at the beginning of the game.

He has extremely high motor rolling to the basket and in space. Contrary to what the stats say, he has very good vision and is adept at passing out of double teams. He sets tremendous picks (reminds me alot of wes unseld, my favorite bullet).

His biggest weakness offensively is that he can only go left. Over play his left hand and it's possible to reduce his post game.

He has really high motor and extemely aggressive, I would actually put boyd and Calixte on him.

Boyd doesn’t really play against bigs since he’s undersized, if anything AJ (if he’s healthy), Calixte and Reuter will be on him one on one with doubles coming. Obviously mainly Reuter and Calixte, but maybe some help from AJ and Miller too.

If he’s good on doubles with passing, mason will have to try to jump his lane and get out on the shooters fast. They are going to have to make him very uncomfortable even if he scores 15 points. It may come down to shutting his support down.

Agreed and get him out of his normal position - hard to do to him at home.

This will be a rock fight.

In case there’s anyone still in this thread that wants anything more than to argue with MudKat -

Here’s our Patriots vs Rams podcast. We got a new super silly intro that should bring back some great memories. Hint: Gus Johnson

In this episode we obviously talk Mason vs vcu, beating GW and Dayton, Chris gives some pregame spot ideas in case you’re making the trip south and we end the show talking about some Mason player flops of the last 10 years......don’t ask us why, we have this convo weekly for some reason. We’ll never come down from the hype of Copes, AO and Royal.

Serious Question- did Royal ever play games for us? I don't remember anything about him. At least with Copes I remember lots of blocked shots (and stolen pillows??) and AO just an utter lack of anything related to basketball skill.

Also what about Hollaway? We all thought he was going to be Steph Curry, and then didn't even play 4 years of college ball.

Yes he did. He played in a total of 26 games over 2 seasons.

In the Charleston loss he fouled out. If he isn't good at passing out of double teams, and can only go one direction you shouldn't be too worried about him. I don't think he is better than the Dayton bigs we faced.

Hello dummy! I see you usin that Mooney math eh? 9-9 is the same as.....guess. It's crazy, you aren't going to believe it........it's the same as 9-9!!!!

Hey buddy!

If we want to split hairs technically Mason finished 6th with tiebreakers while vcu finished 8th. But yes both teams were 9-9. :crazytongue:

I’m sure you’ve seen my thoughts on the game and all that good stuff. Let’s hear yours.

Just gotta say this is exciting, I haven't seen the boards buzzing like this since I've been reading them. 48 hours before game day and we already have a 10 page game thread full of shit talking and a tiny bit of actual basketball analysis. Really looking forward to this, hoping that we can maintain this kind of buzz. Winning really does cure all.

Bourbon, the tears of an unemployed vcu grad, and ketchup from the McDonalds that they got fired from?
