I don’t know why I’m even entertaining this conversation. But I’m getting real tired of hearing about it, so I’m going to try to convince you that your concerns, while some are valid, are premature and irrelevant at this point.Dp can not coach or recruit at the A10 level. If we allow him another five years, I am honestly not sure our program can recover. Whatever it takes, we need to get the funds to get him out of here before its too late. Maybe he will agree to a reasonable buyout of the contract.
First, let’s say that you’re right and DP is not the right man for the job. Why would he agree to a buyout at this point? It would have to be for an extraordinarily large sum of money. In those negotiations, he would have all the power due to the length of his contract. Also, he can reasonably expect to have a much better season next year. So why would he agree to a buyout now, when his value will conceivably increase after next season? That is why conversations about firing Paulsen are completely irrelevant at this point.
Second, to say that he can’t coach at the A-10 level is absurd. Where did he finish in A-10 coach of the year voting last season? If memory serves, it was somewhere between 2 and 4. He also coached the conference’s most improved player last year. The team vastly overachieved.
To say he can’t recruit is entirely premature. None of his recruits have completed their careers here. We don’t know what developments they will make. So far, his juniors are doing pretty well - especially for being unheralded, last-minute recruits. Mar and Calixte are showing some promise as freshman. The boards are getting updated constantly with positive news about our two commits. Sure, the sophomores are in a bit of a slump, but I’m thinking they will come around. We just don’t know yet. DP also “recruited” Reuter who should make a big difference next year. Either way, it’s too early to make definitive statements.
