In reference to the Hewitt firing-
“Mason made a significant commitment to its athletic programs, especially men’s basketball, when the university moved to the Atlantic 10 Conference two years ago,” George Mason Director of Athletics Brad Edwards said in a statement. “The university has high expectations for the program and thus determined a change was needed."

Mason has shown commitment to the basketball program by firing Hewitt. They built a dedicated practice facility, they renovated the locker room. They made enhancements to the arena. I can’t imagine mason investing that much money into the program and be content with the results.

Dude he fired Hewitt with one year left on his deal.. if Paulsen doesn’t perform next season he will be gone. Mason is not a program that can afford to fire a coach with multiple years left on their contract.

I don't believe that he will be fired after this season. But, it would be less costly to fire Paulsen with 2 years left on his contract than it was to fire Hewitt.

You’re probably right, but everyone is just speculating. We have no idea of Mason’s financials. Not to mention Paulsen’s contract isn’t as rich as Hewitts.

Perhaps BE knew he would be willing to fire Paulsen with two years left on his contract. That’s why he gave him extensions when it wasn’t warranted.

The extension could help on the recruiting trail. But it reality it means jack. Obviously I’m just speculating, but it wouldn’t be completely crazy to move on from Paulsen

The difference is the previous AD hired Hewitt and our current AD hired Paulsen, so there was a lot less leash given to Hewitt.

Agreed because firing Dave is an admission by Brad that he made a bad hire. He’s going to wait as long as he can to pull the trigger on his guy.

this is a good point a lot are ignoring. Brad looks like a moron giving those extensions and then firing him at this point. Probably the biggest factor in all this with a new president.

"No one wants to fire the guy they hired and admit they made a mistake." I wish people didn't see things that way. I see it all the time in my profession. I'm a teacher and most teachers these days are superb. Most principals are not. But superintendents NEVER want to fire their principals and admit they hired the wrong person. So dumb.

I don't "blame" Edwards for the Paulsen hire. It seemed like a good hire. We like to think there were a bunch of great choices we could afford, but DP may well have been the best choice and many of us liked the hire. Sometimes things don't pan out. It happens

What makes you say that though. Brad fired Hewitt after his 4th year. No way Paulsen deserves 6 years.

Your opinion is heard but Brad believes Dave knows his X’s and O’s and is committed to recruiting top A10 talent. They have a good working relationship, Brad supports Dave. You want that from your AD. Clearly Brad could be wrong about DP but DP is respected across the A10. Not here to convince anyone, we have convinced ourselves countless times the last few years, but just filling you in on what I know.

I wouldn’t even describe his seat as hot yet going into next year. People asked why I did a 180 in this thread, it’s because I realized there was no chance he was getting fired after this year. Soooo, go green go gold...fight fight fight.

Would really appreciate whoever posts on this account to maybe include initials after since I don’t think YOU necessarily 180’d but someone else on this account certainly likes paulsen alot less than you. Unless after us continuing to lose the last three weeks has changed their minds too lol

Like any coach when asked is going to say “yea man that guys sucks. He doesn’t know what he’s doing”.

Ridiculous

I watch alot of mid major basketball wherever it’s on. Every time a coach interviewed they say great things about the other coach even if that coach is in last place and has been for years.

Both posts you’re referencing were me, Bryan, from time to time a couple other guys hop on here. I didn’t 180, I’ve questioned Paulsen since he got here, I just came to a realization he wasn’t getting fired. Can only hammer the guy so many times, at heart I’m a fan and excited for incoming recruits. I still want to enjoy this. I have been critical of DP but I’ve praised him plenty of times in the past too, maybe you missed that content, we do put out a shit ton of stuff.

But, do you agree that his seat is rather warm - https://www.coachesdatabase.com/hot-seat-report/?

I wonder if Paulsen's situation will mirror that of Mason's women coach Nyla Milleson? After 4 losing seasons, it appeared to me that she would likely be fired at the end of her 5-year contract. But, she got grad transfer Natalie Butler from UConn and the best Mason freshman in years by the name of Nicole Cardano-Hillary. After finishing the 2017-18 season with a 24-10 (11-5 A10) record. Edwards awarded her with a 3-year contract extension.

Will Paulsen have an outstanding 2020-21 season, and receive a multi-year contract extension?

How about very good freshmen, and the return of AJ and a healthy Kier?
Given that scenario we'd probably finish 6th or 7th at best. Not trying to be Debbie Downer but we were picked 9th this year with Kier, Boyd, AJ, and the crew.
