Motion implies that there is actually movement happening away from the ball. Can you honestly look at our offense and see anyone screening down? Setting backside fades? Hell even cutting to the hoop?

Just because we call something a motion doesn’t make it a motion.

exactly what I was thinking, I saw those teams moving, screening, cutting and making it look good.

ours is in slow motion, and we definitely don’t have the shooter to pop a 3 off a screen.

Ive noticed it since the beginning of the season. Hartwell especially either completely ignores the roller (or can’t see him over the defender). But no one seems to be reading the defense.

Agreed, but I was referring to when Odurro finally started earning more playing time. It's easier to play off Calixte since he's not a threat outside of five feet. Nobody is going to confuse Odurro with Dirk Nowitski, but he at least has a serviceable enough of a jumper for teams to have do defend him away from the post.

Yes, if you have shooters on the court, guys who go 100% all the time, and depth, this offense can be successful. Both of the teams in the video (Bucknell and Army) had both. Army under Zach Spiker played at least 10 guys and he would do hockey style subs all the time. I watched them play numerous times and guys would give 100% effort for a couple minutes and then he would sub all 5 guys out. Bucknell was full of shooters at numerous positions and those guys played hard on both ends. This team (and all of DP's Mason teams) have no depth and lack pure shooters. I won't put that all on DP even though some of it is his fault. However, he needs to recognize the strengths (and weaknesses) of his team and adjust. That is my biggest issue with him. All the great coaches know when to adjust and for whatever reason DP is too stubborn to do so.

Well said, for someone who said he adjusts to his personnel as needed, doesn’t seem like he’s done it this year.

Of course there is off the ball action.

2 issues -

a. We rarely make contact with our screens, so the off ball action doesn’t free anything up.

b. Too often Calixte and Oduro are way too late to reverse the ball and then they’ll run and screen for the guy they passed to, not making contact therefor not getting the mismatch.

I also don’t agree that this offense was built for Kier, this has been Dave’s bread and butter during his career. He very much could have changed the offense, still can. He does try and call some set plays, “smash” is one, but I don’t notice it too much. It’s all trash though right now, just wanted to point out that it’s a motion offense.

I have to say, while I am too apathetic about things and critical of Paulsen in some regards, I still give this season a C-. vcu lost again last night, we totally broke them and we ruined their season, and we didn't lose to a cupcake at home for once.

I mean, Kier and Boyd don't excuse our A-10 play, but nobody sane should look at us and think we should be more than 1-2 games better in the league, really.

And here it is. Calling for a Paulsen extension already I see.

sadly with the improved league and everything mason has not being there yet, this is everything in a nutshell.

will the league always be this good? No. Will mason always be this bad? No.

Hopefully improvement on mason’s side comes back

These coaches need to start winning right now, but that may not even be enough…

  • Dave Paulsen (George Mason)
    • George Mason is no longer the perennial postseason squad and NCAA Cinderella it was just a decade ago. Ever since Jim Larrañaga left, the Patriots have become an also-ran struggling to regain relevance in a competitive A-10. Paulsen came on in 2015 and has done nothing to move the needle. The highlight was the 2017 squad that won 20 games and went to CBI, but this is a program that went to five NCAAs and three NITs from 1997-2011. His fifth Patriots team might be his worst yet, sitting near the bottom of the A-10 at just 4-11 (15-13 overall)."
