On a tangent, I am still a little surprised that St. Joe's got rid of Martelli. Even though they had some droughts and they seemed to be wildly up and down, they had had 2 NCAA tournament appearances and A10 conference championships (same years) in the last 6 years of his tenure.

yea.... and people say we are moving too fast on DP. Joe's is a stark example of jumping the proverbial gun. Martelli is no Schmidt but jeesh that had to be hard to do

Maybe. Points and Rebounds are far from the full story but is an interesting comparison.

I think the offense/defense guard play of Greene/Miller/Hartwell/Kier is way ahead of Livingston/Moore/Grayer/Abram though. Remember that both Livingston and Grayer were both Freshmen that season.

There were hints from the new AD that there were other things going on that she didnt like (I think I saw it in an article somewhere)

I could see firing him if this season continues on the same trajectory. Would be a shame to not get to see the new recruits get their shot though..I really think Kolek and Polite will be good players if they ever play at Mason. Are there any good coaching candidates out there that would be an upgrade to Paulsen that would accept Mason money to coach here?

He’s not getting fired until after next year at the earliest — and maybe not even then — so it’s a moot point.

Pulling our program out of the gutter...newsflash, it's February and we have 2 wins in the A10 versus teams that are vying for the PIG. We started 11-1 and we're currently 13-9. We likely won't finish above 500 this year. It's safe to say, we're back in the gutter or about to roll back into it.

I'd go as far as saying the roster DP had year one (dumpster fire) could likely beat our current roster.
Give me: Otis, Moore, Jalen, Shevon, Grayer over XJ, Greene, Miller, AJ, Oduro

This is what I’ve been saying all along. That was a great roster, and Paulsen finished 12th in the league.

Jim your opinion on everything does not have to be how it actually is. Everything you say is so definite and I get you’re a writer and that’s why it’s like that. Arguably I would take Jalen, shevon, Marko, marquise and a young OTis and jaire over the 7 dudes paulsen gives the playing time to now. We weren’t deep with 3 scrub recruits that paulsen gets a pass for. But those are the best 2 bigs he has had. AJ vs shevon would have been a sad sight

Oduro trying to play defense on shevon would have been like the pillsbury doughboy vs Godzilla

In the give him another year camp. Being redundant, but my biggest disappointment is Paulsen's failure to bring in a big, bruising big man of the type we were used to seeing under Larranaga. Thought that would be the least concern after he had Muscala at Bucknell. Just feels too many things need to happen for Paulsen and GMU to take a huge step forward next year.

Any Mason profs have a kid who can be that dominant big man? Adopted or otherwise? That's how Colgate got Adonal Foyle.

Not sure who started the rift, but Holloway decided to forge his senior year of basketball instead of playing for paulsen. It makes you wonder.

Story I heard: PH got mad about something in practice and threw a ball across the court. Paulson told him to go get it. PH responds by saying something like “No! That’s what managers are for.” Apparently Paulson responded by saying, “You’re not getting any PT until you get that ball.” Guess he never got the ball.

I’m sure there was a lot more too it than just this.

Meh what’s to stop those same two guys from transferring if he gets fired next year? All the more likely if they are as good as everyone is projecting. I think it’s better to just rip off the bandaid at some point. There will always be next years recruits, at some point the need for new leadership outweighs the what if’s for incoming freshman (see hewitts last year and the recruits we lost after we canned him, who were arguably more talented than anyone we have coming in next year)

You may be right about Paulsen - perhaps the Patriots will make the NCAA tourney next season (particularly if AJ and a healthy Kier returns). But, let's be honest, you were not excited about the hiring of Paulsen:

"Also, can anyone honestly say that they think Dave Paulsen will ever be an upper-echelon A-10 coach?

No offense to Paulsen. If he is the new coach, I'll give him a chance like everyone else, but this does feel like a CAA hire.

May as well make a run at Bill Coen if we're going in that direction."

it is nuts to me that the Paulsen fans in here that also are totally against saying anything bad about 18-21 year old amateur athletes can listen to him blame the kids every single press conference of the last 5 years. It is tough to watch sometimes and I am not holier than thou about saying Gonar Mar SUCKS
