GIVING DAY 2023
For the record I donated this past year and went to the North Carolina Central game. I have plans to go the URI and Davidson games. If my schedule opens up I will go to the vcu game in January.
Ok I take it back then

I complain, because the fans should not tolerate mediocracy. College Athletic programs are directly linked to school branding and reputation. Athletics have far-reaching implications for students, faculty, and the community. Athletic programs drive enrollment and heighten college profiles.

Researchers discovered 40% percent of students chose their college partly for its social life. Schools with quality athletic programs are meccas of social activity. Students don't only go to college for the education, they want the college experience.

My goal for Mason is to not merely have sports teams, but to have a sport culture which represent long-lived brands that engulf Fairfax/NOVA and permeate the state. Branding translates to MONEY!, but it also lures further donations from Alumni.
That would be one way of thinking. Another would be to understand progress takes time.

My biggest frustration with our fan base is that we do not always appreciate progress and tend to have unrealistic expectations. We expect instant gratification. Now you personally may still show up, but the majority of fans/students don’t want to suffer through growing pains. If we as a fan base don’t show up and keep a decent atmosphere through these times, then we are shooting ourselves in the foot.

More than facilities or uniforms or whatever else, I think recruits care most about the gameday atmosphere. They put in all the hours of work and practice for the satisfaction they get from hearing the roar of the crowd.

We’ve made huge strides in ‘artificially’ (for lack of a better word) creating a better gameday experience. Still, without fans in the stands, the atmosphere can only get but so good. And DJ3, I think your way of thinking keeps many people away from our games, compounding the problem exponentially.

Fans are those who support their team through thick and thin. No one wants their team or other fans to accept mediocrity. But right now, I'd rather be mediocre than on Hewitt's sinking garbage scow.

DJ3, you speak of "brand-building" like it's a switch that one can turn off and on. Brands are built with intense consistency over the long-term. Let time happen, trust the process.

I agree with you. I think it's unreasonable to expect "instant gratification". This is year three though... It's hard for me to imagine us much better next season even with Reuter.

Yes, year 3 AFTER the complete annihilation of our program. This isn't the NBA, where you can strike gold in a couple successive drafts after being in the gutter for a while. When a college program is decimated, it takes years to build it back up. Our program became the laughing stock of the DMV, and you simply cannot recruit high-level HS basketball players to come play for a dumpster fire with a brand new coach in a middling basketball conference.

Like people have said a thousand f*cking times, this is a process, and while there are certain limited shortcuts college coaches can take (JUCO players, grad transfers, etc., along with other unsavory methods), our coach is not willing to take them. He and the AD have changed, and are continuing to change, the culture, the facilities, the gameday experience, and now higher caliber recruits are coming.

Give it a rest already. Jesus. Enjoy the games, enjoy watching these terrific young men grow and gain experience, enjoy the beautiful sport of basketball while you cheer them on through the thick and thin. I honestly have not had this much fun watching a Mason team in a while. They are incredibly easy to root for, and play their asses off. They will get better with time.

Why? We don't lose a single player next season. Otis and Jaire will be seniors (which is a bigger deal than I think you give credit for). Kier and Boyd will be juniors. Mar will have a full year under his belt and will be shifted over to the 4. AJ will have a full year under his belt. Calixte will have a full year under his belt. And Reuter will add depth and bulk at a position of desperate need. I can't imagine why you would think this team would regress or stay the same.

Again, go back and look at the 2009-2010 Mason team who lost by 27 to freaking Radford. Posted a whopping 49 points against George Washington, and lost their last four home games of the season, including a second half collapse against mighty Fairfield.

That same team went 27-7 the next season, beating Villanova in the NCAA tournament as a favorite seed for the first time in program history.

Or the "senior less" 2004 - 2005 Mason Patriots who went 16-13. They did slightly better the next year....

This a fourm where fans can express their opinion. Sorry you don't like my opinion. Feel free to ignore my post because I will not "give it a rest"

The problem is you are harping on something that cannot be changed. So try focusing your ire, like the rest of us, on rotations and defensive schemes and starting lineups or something tangible.

The he should have gotten a JUCO or a grad transfer conversation was over in August.

One big difference. Coach L!

DP needs to be on watch
Hewitt finished his tenure with Mason with a .496 winning percentage. DP currently has a .467 winning percentage.

Kicker here is that Reuter will be an instant starter not just some extra depth. He is exactly what DP wants in a big, he can step out and hit the 3 (before the W&M game he was hitting consecutive shots from behind the bench) and also has the post moves that basically packed Troy's bags. The video I've seen of their summer open gym pick-up games showed Reuter eating Troy up in the post any chance he got.

Dear bard

Masonhoops fourm people are mean to me. They make fun of my speling and don’t like opinion.

Why didn’t David Paulson get a juco big man or grad transfer that was rated five stars? When are we getting football? Why isn’t a red carpet rolled out when I attend my two games a year?

Signed

The great and mighty Coach L's winning percentage after 2 seasons + 11 games: .485 vs. .474 for Coach P.
Coach L's first 20-win season at Mason: 2003-04 (that's 7 seven years for those of you playing at home). Coach P did it in his second season.

Don't get me wrong, I was a Coach L fan; however, he had a very similar start to his time at Mason as Coach P. against much weaker conference opponents. Both took over programs that were decimated by their predecessors. We need to give Coach P time to continue to fix the program.
