On the topic of Steve Smith, I have read several articles and they all only list two quotes from him that can mean just about anything. Only quotes I have found:

"I'm meeting with his stepdad," Smith said of Williamson in the recording, according to Borzello. "Me and his stepdad are going to work it out."

And:
recorded Smith saying the Tigers' football program has been successful in recent years because "if you use resources at Clemson, you can really keep everything tight."

It just doesn't seem that those statements prove anything at all. I am not defending him because they are possibly code for bribes, but I did not hear anything particularly damning. They could just as easily be talk for talking to the parents in the cases where they are the decision maker about getting their kids to come to your school. What am I missing, was there more?

Bring on Steve Smith, he'll balance it out with Hutch. Clean and dirty for the win.

Hopefully it helps his inbounds plays. Paulsen could look like Patrice O’Neal (RIP) and I wouldn’t care as long as dude could recruit and coach....

SUPER interesting time post this, to compare and contrast Hewitt and Paulsen.

Obvious difference is Paulsen is on the upswing (I'm very excited about our recent recruiting) while things were falling apart under Hewitt. I hate myself for already saying this again but I think we could be really good next year.

Interestingly if you take out their respective first seasons (Hewitt inheriting L’s team and Paulsen inheriting Hewitt’s) their overall records are .420 for Hewitt (42-58) and .600 for Paulsen (54-46).

No need to remove seasons to make DP a better coach. The numbers don't lie, they are statistically identical. We all understand both of their trajectories. Coaches own every season they coach, no matter what. Player retention still falls on the coach and are we really going to discount 2 guys that went to the G-League, a 4-star recruit ESPN top 100, Jenkins and Marko?

I agree with Petey, next year looks like a special one

I didn't really post it to compare the two. Overall Mason is 755 - 736. Historically the program has been poor to mediocre for the most part, the main point of my stats. Paulsen, to date, fits right into that category. Some on the boards are ready for him to go, others defend him. I guess I am somewhere in the middle. To be honest I was expecting more from DP after 4 years. I don't know of anyone who would claim that Hewitt was the better coach, or even the equal of DP. I was just curious so did a little research. Again, due to tech issues I was cut out of all board discussion for 8 months. Trying to be selective in how I get back into the game. I'm anxious for a return to relevance and an NCAA appearance. This year should help in determining if DP is the man or not.

I mean, the team you are referencing went 9-22 the season before Paulsen was hired. But I also get your point.

I’ve been bad about following the A10 in the off-season...how good is the league looking next year? I can think of a few guys who will likely be gone but will we be able to bridge what will surely be a pretty big gap between us and the top this year?

vcu loses a lot, and URI loses Dowtin and Langevine, but the league is still relatively young. Richmond doesn’t have a Senior on the team, Bona is young, Davidson loses JAG, but pretty much everyone is coming back (unless Grady declares for real next year). Dayton loses Miksell And Landers, but they are role players rather than stars (unless Toppin leaves for the NBA). It should be another strong conference next year.

I'd put very low odds on Grady and Toppin both coming back. Obi was almost out the door this year.

Conference stands to lose a lot of star power at the top. vcu and Rhody definitely lose two of their best players, while it's very likely for Davidson and Dayton.

The projected middle shouldn't lose much. Kier is the best graduating player between Mason, Bona, Duquesne, Richmond, and SLU. Those teams will only combine to graduate three starters, by my count, so really tough to say how the A10 will be next year until we're see things shake out this year.

Guess I feel like next year will mirror this year in that we’ll have lost our best player, some guys will make some jumps, and we’ll sort of be at the mercy of how the rest of the league is. I’m of the opinion that we’re a better team this year than last because as much as I loved Otis, we were playing with four defenders. However, the rest of the league is much improved and I feel like we’ll have a worse record despite being better.

Depends on what happens with AJ and Boyd.

Also curious to see who loses their starting spot once a Kier comes back this season, because if AJ does come back, the full starting 5 from the first game is coming back.

Unfortunately, Boyd has played his last game in a Mason uniform. Kier could redshirt and come back for a fifth year — he’s not going to, but he could — because we’re going to have one transfer out after this season and I think we all know who it is.
