I (gasp) agree with sleeperpick - he is the exact opposite of what I wanted too. I was hoping for a guy who was well connected in an major inner city market and he could use some of his current connections with recruits to land us some talent quickly. What we got was an IVY league guy who was recruiting a different type of player than the type we will land here at Mason.
Having said that, all of that has zero barring on how he will do here as a coach or if it was a good hire or not. I wish him the best and will be pulling for him 100%. Just because he isn't what I wanted doesn't make him bad - actually probably the opposite!

agree. I hope we win 25 games next year and Jim can show up to his one game per year and throw a beer in my face...... So GOOOO Mr. Hutchins..... but I hold my breath because this is not what we needed (Paulsen's own mouth)

you said I never heard of him before.. and Dartmouth getting 25 wins in 3 seasons did enough for me. I am sure he was quintessential when Williams won their D3 title.. That is all I have ever heard about Paulsen and his cronies.
Not the hire I was hoping for. Nor does it seem like Pete has had that much time working with DP to know him that well. Just one year together at William's. Was it the best DP could do? Maybe we are becoming an Ivy league school soon.

Agree with a lot that’s been mentioned. Coming out of the ivy isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but it doesn’t do anything to change our perception or give obvious inroads into other markets for a new kind of player.
What offense did he run? What defense? What can we expect from him as a coach?
I wanted a big-time recruiter like Rasheen Davis and posted so here. So I guess because I’m not throwing a tantrum that means I worship the coach. Gotcha.
One of the many differences between me and you is I’d rather Mason Basketball be successful than have my relentless negativity be vindicated.
So I will wait and give Hutchins a chance to do the job before I trash him. If that means I am “worshipping” at the altar of Dave Paulsen, so be it.
Never heard of the guy but coach of the year honors and coached two future NBA players. Not exactly lights out but not terrible either.
I’m wondering what some people would have thought about the Larranaga hire when he first came on to coach Mason. DP had a much better resume coming in as a coach. But Larranaga completely changed the program.

They would have trashed him. Who the F ever heard of Bowling Green?
not a clue and not a clue and honestly it doesn't really matter because Paulsen is the schemer so we can't expect too much to change..
he had REALLY good teams there.. Vonleh, Hanlan and I believe he coached ND's monster Zach Auguste(but could be wrong on years)... he coached players in high school that would be our best player as high schoolers.. tough to judge.. seemed like a good post grad coach that hasn't really panned out at the next level. it happens

I guess we can hang our hopes on this? Reading into this I’m guessing his role may be as talent evaluator and development? If he’s put kids in those leagues he knows what to look for?
Six of his players went on to play in the Ivy League, and two others were eventually selected in the NBA Draft — Noah Vonleh (ninth overall in 2014) and Olivier Hanlan (42nd overall in 2015). His former players were represented at 13 different Division I institutions in 2015-16, including Kansas, Notre Dame, Gonzaga and Syracuse.
Six of his players went on to play in the Ivy League, and two others were eventually selected in the NBA Draft — Noah Vonleh (ninth overall in 2014) and Olivier Hanlan (42nd overall in 2015). You keep being the best cheerleader you can Jim and I will keep showing up to games and eating cold Vienna Inn hot dogs. we support in different ways. you with your mouth and me with my pocket.. nothing wrong with either... but I don't appreciate someone who admittedly doesn't donate questioning my fanhood.. we deserve BETTER

Just wanted to drop in to say I hate the offseason but everyone going nuts over Pete Hutchins is quite amusing.
I hope Dave apologizes to everyone personally for not getting some big name assistant that had no interest in coming to Mason and wouldn’t work well with our program. I wish he’d bring back Roland Houston! /sarcasm
That said the guy is on his way up, he actually just got promoted to associate head coach. He is also a Paulsen disciple, and probably approaches things in the way Paulsen likes which is why he’s obviously coming. I can’t see any of those as negatives. I hope with him being a prep school head coach he has some good connections already.
I think as long as Simpkins sticks around (hopefully) he’s a nice addition. If Simpkins leaves they’ll need much more of a seasoned coach.

Repeatedly trashing everything the coach does and posting negative messages about our recruits before their first college practice is an interesting approach to help our program get better.
I never said I don’t donate. I said I’m not in a financial position right now to donate as much as I would like to.
I guess now we’re having a “donation measuring” contest. Awesome.
