Short mention of Mason and Tony Skinn by Pat Forde on the Tony Kornheiser podcast today when talking about college basketball & NCAA tournament, although much more talk about how strong the SEC was and the possibility of multiple SEC teams in the Final 4.

Mason and Drake were the only mid-majors mentioned and neither got a detailed analysis of what they needed to do to get in. Still....nice to be included in the conversation.

Watching SLU at Loyola on espn2--good game with 7 min left. Dalen Cuff mentioned Mason and how well we're playing but saying our #68(?) NET isn't good enough for an at-large, with the 2 early non-conference losses really hurting us. Our Quad 1+2 record is pretty good, but thinks we'll need to win the A10 trny to go to the NCAAs.

Walk-On
If Lunardi has vcu as first out, he thinks they barely missed being a 11 seed. Having Mason as an AQ at 12 means that if vcu beats Mason, that Mason would be out of Lunardi's bracket and wouldn't be an at-large consideration.

Too early for Dalen Cuff or anyone else to say for sure what’s going to happen. I’ve seen a couple bracket guys who have us in, but most do not.

Just keep winning one game at a time, starting tomorrow, and the rest will take care of itself.

It’s very funny that a metric that has us at 68 in a 68 team field somehow is saying “not good enough”. NET blows.

I’d love to have that CMU game back, but honestly the basketball gods gifted us the GW game at home so it kinda comes out in the wash.

The problem isn't with NET; the issue is that every one of the 31conference tournament champions is an automatic qualifier. Many of those will have NETs > 100. Indeed, the #13 conference (Southern) ,according to Kenpom, for example doesn't have ANY teams that are under 100. And there will be upsets in conference tournaments with more teams with NETs > 68 emerging.

Hence, there aren't enough at-large spots for teams with NETs in the 60s. Just look at vcu with a NET in the 30s---Lunardi has them as first four out for an at-large bid.

Maybe I’m crazy but how is our net so low? The a10 had what I thought was a really good OOC? Did those early losses really hurt us that bad

The CMU/ECU losses are crushing and the formula favors margin of victory above expected spread so our number of close OT wins don’t really move the needle as much as beating a team by 20 when you were supposed to win by 5-10.

I do think there should be some sort of mitigation for losing in OT. Like, yeah ECU isn’t a great loss but 2OT on the road shouldn’t be a season killing loss.
