Some of our fans need to stop thinking of every recruit as some savior coming in to play 25 minutes a game. Yes, we do have a few open opportunities for those guys, but the thing sorely missing last season was two or three bench players who could give us 8-12 meaningful minutes a game — or occasionally more if a starter got in foul trouble or injured.

It's easier said than done getting kids in the portal to come here for reduced minutes, but there are definitely opportunities to be an important role player here if guys are willing to embrace that role.
Once the opportunities start drying up, and kids start facing the idea that they could be left without a spot at all, it will get easier to convince them of the value of being a role player at Mason.

Some fans need to realize that Greg had a really solid year in the NEC as well and we know how awful he was at basketball (great kid but Jesus). Offerum was going to be slated for 20-25 per the coach as a 4 in the A10. I’m GOOD with him not being that guy.

Completely agree, and that's why I think the staff wanted a guy like Mezzie or is looking at a guy like Singleton. However, I believe @Patriot8 said that they wanted to bring in a 4 to play starter minutes, so those are the guy who would be candidates. Obviously not Mezzie now, but Singleton for sure. We'll see. Things can always change once a guy arrives based on how they perform.

There is always someone new to go after if someone says no, and I'm fully confident that the staff is going to get guys who can fufill their needs. The top need still is a PG, and hopefully that can be wrapped up very soon. I think we were spoiled because by this time last year we had Schwartz and Gaines and maybe even Cooper. This time around it hasn't been as quick.

He would've given us a good piece - an experienced big man that could give some insurance when Oduro was in foul trouble and to match up against bigger 4s in the conference - even if he wasn't starter quality. Sometimes it's about the fit vs the quality of the player.
I feel you I’m just saying if that kids 6 foot 8 like they say then Reuter is A10 player of the year. We are talking about him being a contributing/starting 4 and he’s 6 foot 6 tops.

Adding every day too. Jarren Holmes from Bona entered today. Would love him instead at the 4

Yeah, I'm really not worried about not getting just about anyone at this stage because of this, possible exception being Rudi, since he represents one of the few realistic chances to upgrade from XJ.

But to Tom's point, agree. Really just a PG who can shoot and play some minutes, especially crunch time, and a 3-4 who can log 8-16 solid are all we need.

KE rises or falls based on Fernandez, Dinkins, Jones, maybe Polite's development. Gonna have to find us a big inside at some point, but that can be a post-Oduro thing if need be.

Planning on doing a visit recap with Rudi tomorrow. Anybody have any questions they'd like for me to ask other than how he likes his steak cooked?

Here are some ideas. Please filter as needed, not sure what is/is not appropriate to ask.

Generic questions:

When did you first know you wanted to play college basketball?

Who had the greatest influence on your game growing up? And was there anyone in particular you tried to model your game on?

Visit-related question:

You've been through the recruiting process a few times now. What are you looking for in a coaching staff?

What stood out most from his experience with campus, the team etc. Like try to get a vibe of if there was one thing he’d remember what would it be. Whether it was the practice facility, campus looking nice, basketball being priority etc.

While the top need might be PG, another big is a HUGE need. We literally have one, maybe two post players on the team and only one that averaged double figure minutes last year. I like Malik Henry’s energy but unless he improves his offensive game drastically, I don’t see him contributing much. I mean hell, there is still a small chance Josh stays in the draft which leaves us with 0 big men who averaged more than 8 minutes a game. I put Josh staying in the draft at less than 1% but as of right now he is still in the process.

Since when is 6 and 5 a really solid year?

NIL might derail us from getting any of the targets we had visiting. Maybe we need to ask if our staff is equipped and/or knowledgeable about the NIL landscape. Simpk and Felton are older. KE prob gets it, but can he navigate it alone?? If Rudi is watching what OCM got his new transfer, then maybe we will have to wait till the very end of the trough feeding.

Who was your host? How do you make a connection with a guy over a weekend while staying with them? What do the current players show you or tell you that the coaches might not?

Just for fun - what's the worst recruiting pitch you've ever had/heard?

What would playing for such a young, NBA-experienced coach mean to you? How much street cred does KE get for having played against the likes of Kobe Bryant?

One last question - what's it like being on visits at the same time as other recruits? How does it compare to being the only prospect on campus for a weekend?
