2020-2021 Schedule Thread

Per Jon Rothsteinbot- Mason will play in an MTE in DC with Northeastern, Howard, and UMBC.

Fire away fellas.

NE: lost all their good players other than rising sophomore point guard Tyson Walker... They have 0 seniors but are extremely tall.... Former GW kid Jordan Roland dropped 22ppg last year as a redshirt senior. Should not be very good next year
Howard: 5 star Center freshman Makur Maker (Thon Maker's brother?) and 4 star Purdue former starter Nojel Eastern highlight a new look Howard team... Eastern has not been given eligibility for next season yet and might not because he had a very weird transfer period (committed to Michigan but then was not admitted to the school). They return their second leading scorer and not much else from last year... RJ Cole who killed us two years ago is now at UCONN. they might be good because of dominating their conference but won't be great.
UMBC: Return 4 of 5 starters from last years crappy team. Still have LJ Owens and Keondre Kennedy who are pretty good. Also have their 5'2" PG who is really fun to watch. They also have 5 scholarships open for 2021 with 0 offers out there which makes me thankful for how crappy Paulsen is in comparison. This is no longer the team that beat UVA and should be pretty bad IMO...

Overall, shit tournament but could lose to Howard or UMBC

It would be the most mason thing ever to schedule a paddy cake tournament and not win it.

Although they were 4 - 29 last year. LOL. All airport team.

this is so on brand it hurts... but why would we expect different. at least 8 A10 teams are in much better MTE's than we are but that should be no surprise at this point... hell St Louis is thinking of pulling out of there's because of lack of quality (much better than ours)

I hope Basketball Travelers is paying us a lot of money to play in this. I wonder what our options were with COVID - probably not a lot?

I hope Mason gets a good payday too from this. I always thought the point of MTEs were to get some good games against teams equivalent or above. Yes, I know its Covid and probably scheduling this year was a big mish mosh. But Mason being in a tournament with Howard UMBC and Northeastern keeps the trend of what they have done out of conference wise. I had my hopes up for something a little bigger and better but obviously this was what they decided was the best for this year.

I give some leeway because of Covid, but I have to think they could have done a little better than this. Just my .02.

There’s a 0 percent chance we are getting paid to play in this. If anything, we are paying an entry fee.

What exactly are we bringing to the table that would attract a P6 team?

Dave can’t force them to put us on the schedule, and now that buy games are crippled there’s even less motivation for them to do so.

yea they just pulled out of the one in Florida for this one because it wasn't as good as this one... That is quite the spread right there with some really good non conf games

Dave can’t force them to put us on the schedule, and now that buy games are crippled there’s even less motivation for them to do so.

Duquesne is literally the same team as us to many of our friends (first experienced team the roster has ever seen, middle of the road A10). I think they are a heck of a lot better than we are and so does every A-10 pundit not connected to Mason but they got into the Kentucky or Louisville MTE... The day Fordham gets into one with P5 will probably blow your mind as Neubauer and Paulsen routinely schedule cupcakes and then get their asses kicked in the A-10 to make it seem like 14-18 wins means he did a good job... most of you were fooled last year and continue to be every year which is crazy

Davidson should be worse than us this year but they got invited to Maui Invitational and are going to the replacement in Asheville with a slew of tournament teams...

I can go on but don't care to.

We are a mediocre win and a bad loss to P5 teams... that is what the majority of our A-10 peers are other than St Louis, Dayton, Richmond and URI... we just think differently as a program.. been DP's MO the entire time he has been here

Yep I get that, theres little to no incentive for a school like Mason to pop on the schedule like youve said previously. Mason doesn't bring a value RPI but also can be a bad loss too. I get that with Covid things are harder too.

That said, its disappointing that this is the best they could come up with for an MTE. I'm not asking for Duke, but I'm merely asking for at least one team that is equivalent or better. I guess I had my hopes up too high.

YOU have literally said we will be better than Duquesne this year... yet they get asked out on hot dates while we take our sisters to prom... you don't see an issue with that? either we aren't going to be that great again (with the team all the DP lovers have been fantasizing over) or we are competitive with a team Duquesne that are a top 4 love type of team. you can't have it both ways to prove multiple points... all I am saying.

This is not the position we should be striving to be at but we are with DP in year 6 right? time to change things up since we are still a BAD LOSS to everyone right?

I’m talking about the public perception of Duquesne versus Mason, not mine. Most people expect them to be significantly better than us.

Also please don’t think I’m defending or excusing where we are. Just saying, this is reality ... maybe it’s partly because our coach likes to schedule wins (he’s not alone), but also because our program is irrelevant and good teams have better options for MTE opponents. The days of us getting invited to even decent parties are over.
