GIVING DAY 2023
Per Jon Rothsteinbot- Mason will play in an MTE in DC with Northeastern, Howard, and UMBC.

Fire away fellas.

This should have been the time to put together a DMV Tournament like the Philadelphia Big 5

Howard, American, GT, GWU
GMU, Virginia
Maryland, UMBC

2 4 team brackets
split so that teams from the same conference dont play each other
and MD/GT dont play each other
3 games per team, 4 games per day
Th-SA of Thanksgiving week
a feast for the locals

If that kind of event was going to happen it would have before now. Georgetown and Maryland have less than no interest in participating and I doubt that’s going to change any time soon.

Agree, I’d rather see us put together some sort of commonwealth cup against VA schools. Might not be able to get UVA/VT at first, but who knows. Unlikely but I think it would be cool and I agree the DMV thing has sailed.

"11 TERRAPINS

"There might be another team in the Big Ten that has as big of a drop off as the Terrapins. Maryland won a share of their first conference title last year, and maybe one of the worst teams in the conference this year.

They lost two of the best players in the Big Ten in Anthony Cowan and Jalen Smith. Both averaged at least 15 points per game, while Smith also averaged over 10 rebounds per game. These two drove the Terrapins offense and are going to extremely difficult to replace.

They do return Aaron Wiggins who averaged just over 10 points per game, but with the loss of Cowan and Smith, it will be tough for him to get open looks as he will be the guy the other teams clamp down on. Wiggins will need to show that he can be the man fort he Terrapins or it may be a long season.

Mark Turgeon seemed to be on the hot seat, but the conference title cooled that. But if he drops down to the bottom of the Big Ten this year it may heat right back up. The fans in College Park expect more from their team and a drop off won’t cut it.

The Terrapins are going to be thin after failing to bring in any major recruits and it could be a long year for them. The good news is not a lot is expected of them, but that won’t matter to the fans."

Terps are gonna suck hard. Don’t be surprised if we win that one.

I know the Terps are rebuilding and definitely younger, so if its anytime for Mason to upset its this year.

But I'm skeptical it'll happen because I always like to be pleasantly surprised haha

Looks like all non-conference games will be played against local teams. No plane flights.

We already had JMU on the schedule. I can't imagine us NOT playing them. Did we also have a game set up with ODU (scrolling back through this fun thread looks like we did)...got to imagine we keep that one on the books. If Paulsen could somehow convince UVA and Georgetown to play us, the OOC could be redeemed.

Howard, UMBC, Northeastern + JMU, ODU, UMD, UVA, Georgetown, + <insert I don't care what local team>. That's a workable schedule with some cupcakes, some winnable games, and some tests before conference play. Pull some strings!

Quote me on it, if we land UVA and Georgetown I will call this a good OOC. I don’t see how it will happen, but if we somehow make it work I will concede that is as solid as an OOC as we’ve had under Dave.

Yeah if we land UVA, Georgetown, and UMD in OOC I’d be in favor going the local only route for OOC every year. Ha doubtful though

Georgetown might play its home OOC games on campus at McDonough ... that would be a cool experience for our guys

Yeah I'd be floored if Georgetown scheduled Mason but I guess we'll have to wait and see. They might be in the same predicament as everyone else and be kicking and screaming to the table. 9 out of conf games and only local means you only have so many to choose from and we already know Maryland.

Not holding my breath though about Georgetown though. We'll see.

Georgetown backed out of the Wooden tournament that was moved to Orlando. If you remember, they backed out of the Phil Knight tournament last year. Obviously, they have a valid reason this year, but one could argue that if they really wanted to test themselves in a MTE, they could find one. Saint Louis is a prime example of that and Georgetown has more weight than SLU does. I dont think they like being the 6th or 7th best team in a MTE. It hurts their brand, if they even have one these days.

As for scheduling us, meh. I'd take their money if they want to pay us to come to DC just like I'd take UMD's money to come to College Park.
