I consider him a bust based on the expectations we had for him. Until Copes, I think Tate was the highest rated recruit in program history. He turned things around a bit during his Junior and Senior years, but I don’t think he ever lived up to his hype. Doesn’t mean I think he was a bad player for us. Being a bust is as much about expectations as production.

He was more highly rated than Cam Long (although, they were on the same tier). His expectations got inflated because he was from DeMatha.

Maybe I am misremembering his rating, but I know there were high expectations from him on campus at that time.

Well we all know how accurate old ESPN ratings are . . . I found one old ESPN page with him rated at an 80 with Vlad at a 78 and Cam at an 81. Here’s the link:

So overall I was wrong, and he was not as highly rated as I thought. Still had high expectations and didn’t live up to them in my mind.

Back to the original point, and the purpose of the thread - busts can come from anywhere. We don’t have a track record of success from the West Coast, but that doesn’t mean Hartwell would be a bust.

I guess that’s my point. How do we know that we are flying him out? Maybe they are paying the bill... that’s what I’m trying to find out. There has never been any mention of an offer yet.

Interesting note about Jamal's high school:

Anthony Keidis from the Red Hot Chili Peppers attended the same Fairfax High School in LA.

Which has me worried he may be prone to "give it away" too often. Last thing we need is more turnovers.

The knock on Hartwell's defense was referring to his own admission that the San Jose St coach told him that he needed to do a better job of picking up his man full court, but if you were to watch him in the half court, he sits down in his stance, and his extreme lateral quickness allows him to beat his man to a spot to stop the ball.

People on Twitter who closely follow LA high school hoops are banging on west coast college coaches for not offering Jamal and potentially letting him get away.

Sounds an awful lot like what happened with Otis, who never even got a sniff from either of the two top programs in New Jersey.

Not sure. I did read their top recruit for next year also asked for his release. 6’8 220 3 Star forward from Md. He had an offer at Richmond before signing his LOI in the fall.

His older brother is Richmond center Grant Golden.

Again, I understand DP had a big project on his hands. Probably bigger then he realized when he accepted the job. But I’m not ready to give a coach who is 47-52 “the benefit of the doubt”

49-52 was the record of Porter Moser at Loyola Chicago after three seasons.

His team finished in 8th place in the MVC that season after going 7-11 and would finish 5th the next season at 8-10.

Ryan Odom went 8-11 for an 11th place finish at Charlotte as the interim head coach. He was not retained at the end of the season.

Moser is in his 7th season at Loyola Chicago. It's his first trip to the NCAA tournament in 13 years as a D-1 head coach.

You're right - was looking at his MVC record and completely missed the two previous season in the Horizon League!

So by the SizedForSize coaching evaluation scale, should be on re-build #2 w/their third coach rather than going to the Sweet 16.
