So rothstein put his favorite schools above mason. URI lost a huge senior class and their coach, but somehow places 4th. St Joe’s hasn’t been able to stay healthy in recent years but they place third. St Louis has a bunch of transfers being eligible and hype, they get first. Okay.

He did put mason the highest he ever has (he probably put mason at like 9th last year). But I think he probably should have projected us closer to 3rd or 4th which is where I think they’ll be preseason. Fine by me.
I don't get the St Joe's love. Kimball is not better than Newkirk yet will be asked to do more than Newkirk did and they get a high ranking.

I am not sold on St. Louis. Travis Ford has yet to prove he can coach there. When a team has played a lot of games together, which is what Mason has, it shows (which is partly why 2005-06 was very successful).

We will finish 1st or 2nd (barring any injuries).

I don't see Dowtin as a better player than Livingston, no way.

Also, wasn't Isaac Vann one of the really lazy players for vcu? No way I see him as a breakout player. Why no Jared Reuter? Take a chance Rothstein!

Kimball < Newkirk, Charlie Brown < Demery. I can't imagine them being a better team than Mason, but given the rest of the league you can make a case for them to be in the top 6 pretty easily.

The same thing is true of URI (although they just lost another frontcourt player who turned pro today, so that frontcourt, which was thin already, just got thinner).

I don’t see Dowtin being better than Otis at this point either. Great player and he can get there, but I don’t think he’s as good at this point. His role has obviously been less too.

Not sure about Isaac Vann, I just know there is skepticism around vcu because of Marcus Evans being hurt and them losing some key guys. They do get Gilmore back for a year though. They finally are pretty much clean of any Shaka era recruits (other than Gilmore) I believe.

Is this the biggest season for Mason basketball over the last 10 years?

A successful season and a trip to the NCAA’s means that we are officially back. We finally have an administration that is willing to put money into the program and help us compete at the highest level, rather than winning despite our lack of resources.

Our practice facility is complete. The locker room/film room renovation should be starting soon and the plans look amazing. It’s top notch - no more lipstick on a pig.

The lockers look great - little things like lighting inside each locker, power outlets with usb chargers in each locker, metal vents in the back to keep everything smelling fresh, lots of drawers and shelves with full length doors and player graphics on the top.

The rest of it looks just as nice - frosted glass wall separating the film room from the lounge with our logo etched in the glass, basketball logo light on the ceiling, quartz countertops in the bathroom area... it will be stunning.

Our staff has shown an emphasis in recruiting hard working, high character guys. A successful season this year and the new facilities could really start something special. Feeling very optimistic. Now we have to deliver on the court!

9. How close is George Mason to a breakthrough season? Very. Dave Paulsen has the squad he needs to make a run up the A-10 standings. He’s got an A-10 player of the year candidate in Otis Livingston II. He was second team all-league last season but should be a lock for first. Add in Virginia transfer Jarred Reuter and the Patriots may have the necessary experience to move up in the conference. The Patriots closed out well, winning three of its final six games by three or fewer points. If the Patriots can keep that momentum going then they may be this season’s Davidson — a team that continues to get better and better.

Us at 9 is laughable.

Might be the wrong thread... but can someone please tell me how Duquesne has 15 scholarship players and all of them are now enrolled in school?

You can have 13 headcount scholarships. A headcount means 13 players only can get a dollar or a full ride of athletic grant in aid. Anyone beyond that can only receive NCAA restricted types of aid (ex: academic). The A10 monitors the limits.

Finishing 5th last year while returning all our players with the addition of an ACC transfer along with added depth, I guess dropping from 5th to 9th is reasonable. I'd expect better from Andy Katz. This is the material that makes our players hungry.

Not to mention that pretty much everyone who keeps getting picked ahead of us are, a, teams we beat last year (some of them on their home court), and, b, lost some pretty major contributors.

Picking vcu and Richmond ahead of George Mason seems the height of laziness, like he didn't even pay attention to what happened to those teams last year and in the offseason.

You could make the case for Davidson (although, I'm skeptical that team is going to be nearly as effective without Aldridge sucking up all the defensive attention), maybe St. Louis with all the stars and size and potential that roster has, but that's about it.

Mason went 2-1 against St. Joes, 3-0 against UMass, 1-0 against St. Louis, URI lost almost all of their starters (and a few contributors in the frontcourt to transfer/just leaving the program), St. Joe's lost their two most important players (Newkirk and Demery), Richmond ahead of us is just laughable, vcu has to be just a legacy pick (they were last year too, and look where they finished).

That article made no sense. #9 power ranking but listed as an "on the bubble" team.

How the hell do they pick us behind Richmond???? Really - they are a dumpster fire that burns slow and long.
