20 wins. Top 3 finish. NCAA Tournament birth. My only question is whether Reuter will start the 4 with Calixte or if Mar will play the 4 and Calixte/Reuter will alternate at 5. Also, do you think anyone should be redshirted? I think only Miller should get it as we need JDS's scoring and Hartwell as another option to handle the ball.

Whether Miller should redshirt probably depends on the answer to your first question. If Mar gets pushed to the 3 (I'm guessing he's going to start somewhere), that'll move Grayer to the 2 and Kier to the bench. That's going to make the backcourt really crowded if Mar joins it, which means Miller maybe gets the redshirt. Things will open up for him more over the next two seasons (Grayer next year, Boyd and Kier the year after that). Maybe he doesn't want to burn a year of eligibility sitting on the bench.

Also, I'm not sure we "need" Hartwell's ball handling this year. Otis, Kier, Greene (in that order) should be good enough. If Hartwell gets playing time at the PG position this year, he'll earn it over Kier and Greene.

I think Reuter and Calixte split time the majority of the season. Kier is our best defender, so it's hard for me to imagine him going to the bench. It will be interesting to see how much Calixte and Reuter play together on the overseas trip though.

Also, I'm sure the people going to the open practice tomorrow night will be able to confirm this, but I believe Grayer is still in a hard cast.

Javon Greene became our best defender by the end of the season, actually. But I also think it would be hard to keep Kier on the bench considering what he gives us in terms of a secondary ball carrier, defender, and ability to get to the rim and draw fouls. I also don't know how effective Mar would be as a small forward, so I'm wary of putting him there.

Grayer's injury isn't serious enough to consider he'd miss part of or all of the next season, is it? I mean, it isn't even July yet and we're 5 months away from the start of the season, 4 months from the start of regular practice.

If the starting lineup goes: Otis, Kier, Grayer, Mar, Reuter and if Reuter is able to step out and make 3s, as Paulsen suggested in his interview with Petey, and Mar has gotten stronger in the offseason (as I'm sure he will) I don't think anyone could complain about that.

I do hope Paulsen adds "big" lineup option to the "small" lineup we've been playing with if the team is struggling against bigger lineups.

All of this is to say that I think either Hartwell or Miller could be red-shirted and I wouldn't mind given who we have coming back in the backcourt, meaning (to answer the original question) I don't have a problem using Kier as a starting PG his senior season and having either JDS or Greene start at the 2 and giving Hartwell two years to grow into the role and still have 3 years of potentially starting after Kier graduates; Miller on the other hand sounds like he's closer to Kier than he is to Grayer and so he could use a year to work on his 3-point shooting without sitting behind a ton of guards his freshman year.

What also excites me about next year's team is we haven't even talked about Boyd or AJ yet, and both of those players have given us some important minutes last year in some big games for us.

I think Reuter, Mar, Grayer, Kier, and Otis will be the starters, but Calixte will probably still get starter minutes or close to it at the 4 and 5 and will essentially be a 6th starter.

Having Reuter AND Calixte is going to be huge in that it will allow us to shift everyone towards more minutes at their ideal position, instead of playing "up" a spot. Mar will get to play more 3, Boyd and Grayer hopefully won't have to play the 4, etc.

Whoa - I'll have what you're having!

What the “experts” likely won’t acknowledge is we have both the most complete roster and one of the best coaching staffs in the league.

I know we’ve developed a self-defense mechanism of guarding against high expectations, but there’s no reason why this Mason team can’t finish first if our key guys stay healthy.

"We're winning the league" and "no reason why" we can't finish first are two very different statements. I like it either way, but am more in like with the latter statement myself.

f**k it, let's go - A10 champs or bust!

“We’re winning the league” is my heart talking.

“No reason why we can’t finish first” is my head.

Either way, I think this team is destined for great things. Can’t wait for November.

GIVING DAY 2023
16 guys on the team
I wonder who suits up and who doesnt?
I wonder who got the full scholarships?
and who got partial/shared scholarships?

My guess for full
Mar
Kier
Livingstone
Grayer
Wilson
Greene
Boyd
Rueter
Calixte
3 Freshman

at some schools some players are taken off Athletic scholarships and given academic ones instead,
to stretch the limited scholarship money;
or split a whole scholarship between academic and athletic;
or split a whole athletic scholarship between multiple sports

There are no “split” scholarships in football and basketball.

We have 12 full scholarship players, one open scholarship and four
walk-ons.
