CBSSports.com updated their coaching tracker:

George Mason
Out: Paul Hewitt. Hewitt was moderately successful in his first two seasons after replacing Jim Larranaga, winning 46 games on a CAA scheudle. However, George Mason moved to the Atlantic-10 two years ago, and has struggled mightily, winning only 20 games combined in the two seasons and finishing no better than 11th place. It's tough to say how preferable this job is for a prospective candidate. The Virginia area is a somewhat fertile recruiting ground, but the Patriots have to battle with Virginia, vcu, Richmond, and now even Virginia Tech under Buzz Williams for those players. Plus, they may be punching a bit above their weight in the Atlantic-10 (although as Davidson showed this year, if you have the right coach it's entirely possible to succeed).

I'm tired of people saying we are over our head in A10. vcu moved into the A10 and was successful immediately. Davidson moved into the A10 and was successful immediately. The reason why we haven't been successful in the A10 isn't because of the A10 - it's because we just weren't any good! We were 5th in the CAA in our last year, and that was with ODU in last place. We would have been bad in the MEAC with these past two teams.

Yeah - that comment stings as a GMU fan. Did the cbs writer talk to Hewitt and get hit with a barrage of excuses? If St. Bonaventure can win an A-10 tournament, then certainly Mason can field competitive teams in the A-10.

I know you enjoy playing the "reality check" guy on this board -- hell, I even appreciate it most of the time -- but I am unconvinced that because we weren't mentioned in some "Rumors" blog on FanSided (whatever that is), our program is somehow irrelevant.

So many of these websites are run by guys who know nothing, but throw crap against a wall in search of clicks.

Is our job as "hot" (perceived) as it was in 2011? No.

Is it "better" from a structural standpoint, with Edwards running the show? Absolutely.

I remain confident that our AD will have several quality coaches on campus, where he will lay out his vision for making our program something far better than a plucky Cinderella.

One of them will buy in ... and I guarantee the clowns at FanSided will be the last people on earth to know about it.

Here's the thing...its not even that we are necessarily mentioned in these blogs. And I by no means think we have nothing to offer a prospective coach. We are better than most of the jobs that have come open this year. No doubt. But there is a reality on the perception of outsiders that we do not have.

Agents are in play here...the ultimate survival of the fittest game players. Agents are looking to make the deals that "say look what I did for you" to their coaches. VERY FEW coaches are the lovable saints we want to think they are. No different than those of us on here who went job hunting to upgrade themselves. And despite all we talk....most coaches are going to take the short gamble on Alabama than the potential long term comfort job at Mason. Even in the A10, no one takes the Mason job right now to feel like they have "arrived."

It's all about the brand...and unfortunately...we really dont have one right now. See the above article from CBS. Despite what we think, those perceptions are in play outside of this board in the professional ranks who are making decisions.

So its up to Edwards to sell the F*CK out of us on the future and hope it works.

I'm tired of people saying we are over our head in A10.

The strange thing is it was mostly the broadcasters of our games that perpetuated that excuse by repeating it over and over. I guess it's their job to make both programs they are covering for a game look as good as possible, but some analysts went way over the top in acting like the conference transition was the biggest problem.

Granted, we entered the A10 in one of its best years ever, but there was still no excuse for us to finish at the bottom two years in a row — especially this year when the league took a giant step backwards compared to the season prior.

Because as I have been cautioned....despite what we feel here on the boards....the George Mason name is not "trendy" in the coaching world. We can boast all we want here, but to outsiders...we really are just run of the mill right now.

We're in a good conference (thank god for the A10 move or the fall from grace would be even worse), good location, but we have been weakened by the Hewitt regime, questions about commitment linger from Larranaga, and are usually a backseat program in a talent rich market. Coaches and especially agents...keep tabs on these things and look at it differently than the fan base.

It's up to Edwards et al...to change their perception and sell one of these guys. Otherwise the Prohms of the world will always take a Miss. State, Va Tech, etc over Mason.

The VTs and Mississippi States of the world might be able to pay more, but like Penn State, good luck doing anything with their basketball team. There are so many built in disadvantaged being an also ran in the ACC, Big 10 or SEC.

But then there are ridiculous expectations to become dominant from the fans and boosters.

They repeated EXACTLY what Hewitt told them in pre-game interviews to cover up his BS. I have it on good word that was Hewitt the past 2 years.....blaming the conference change.

My personal opinion, I don't think Prohm has any real interest in coming here. I think he will come and listen, then use us to get him an extension/pay raise at Murray State. It would shock me if we didn't see reports in the next week or so about him getting a new deal.

Now Alabama is a whole different story. I think he would be interested in that one if their flashy names don't pan out.

I never really bought the whole "we have to recruit a whole different type of player to compete in the A10" bs. Things seemed to work ok for vcu and Davidson.

That is the reality. But it does not exist the same way to coaches, who have a bit of arrogance and are looking to make their name.....

Yep. The Hewitt hire just gets worse and worse for us. Washing the stink off of the past 5 years is going to take another 5 at least...lol.

In their defense, vcu and Davidson had really good ball-handers and shooters. Hewitt's lack of success had nothing to do with switching leagues and everything to do with not successfully recruiting the most important positions for a guard-oriented league.

THANK YOU. The 2006 Mason team does JUST FINE in today's A-10. The problem wasn't that the competition got better, the problem was that the team got worse, and the more that Larranaga's influence/players waned, and Hewitt's waxed, the worse the team got.

We could have moved into the A-10, or the ACC, or the MEAC, or stayed in the CAA. The team would have gotten worse and worse vis a vis its competition.

I guess these so-called experts trust their buddy Paul Hewitt more than they trust facts like Davidson winning the A10 regular season in Year 1.
