"40 Under 40: We rank the best young coaches in college basketball

24. Austin Claunch, Nicholls State (30)

One of the youngest guys on this list, Claunch also is the youngest Division I head coach. A native of Argentina, Claunch didn't get a full-time assistant coach job until 2016 under Richie Riley at Nicholls. When Riley left for South Alabama, Claunch was promoted. Last season, Claunch and Nicholls went 21-10 overall and 15-5 in the Southland, finishing tied for second in the league. -- Jeff Borzello

Seton Hall transfer Anthony Nelson has committed to Steve Masiello and Manhattan, he tells me. Also considered Long Beach State. Skilled point guard who should do well in the MAAC. #shbb#gojaspers

f*ck that stupid association. I hope they all piss in their beds tonight.

Lol. TOC did some great things, he got us Larranaga (although supposedly he didn't want him) and somehow kept him around for 14 years. He also got Mason into the A10 the second time after Merten said no the first time.

Unfortunately he will be most remembered for helping piss the final four away, and hiring the coach who liked 6'7 recruits.

Apparently not since he’s getting all these awards.

Everyone but us fans think he’s an amazing talent.

O’Connor won the lottery with a final 4 that landed in his lap through no special efforts/talents of his own. He’s been using that fame ever since to propel his career and legacy. Mason may not have capitalized on the final 4 but Tommy boy sure has.

He then proceeded it to shit it all away with terrible decisions that we may never recover from. He cuts and runs before his name fully associated with this colossal failure.

He is a fraud as an AD and not much good at anything else except being an excellent self serving politician with great hair. It should be embarrassing this fraud is part of any HOF associated with the game of basketball.

I think you're distorting O'Connor's record a bit. Granted his post-Final 4 hiring of Hewitt was a huge mistake, but he obviously was respected enough as an AD to be voted Chairman of the NCAA Selection Committee the year we made the Final 4. Indeed, I bet more than a few Hofstra fans would argue that TOC being Chairman of that committee WAS the reason we made it that year!

Further, he did keep Larranaga here after the Final 4 for a few years, despite a serious offer from Coach L's alma mater, which must have been difficult for him to turn down. Not only did Shaka's success at duplicating our Final 4 run lead to Larranaga's dissatisfaction, but I think the conventional wisdom that Power 5 schools would not be seriously looking for someone as old as Coach L led Mason to be slow in reacting to the need to upgrade his situation in order to keep him.

"Silver Waves Media Presents: The 100 Most Influential People in Men’s College Basketball in 2020

RICK BARNES - TENNESSEE HEAD COACH

Different programs have reaped the benefits of having Barnes on the sidelines during his 34-year career. He owns a 707-375 (.653) overall record during that time. The Volunteers have been taken to new heights and their future has never looked brighter after Barnes was named the 2019 Naismith Coach of the Year for guiding the Vols to a school-record-tying 31 wins and a Sweet Sixteen appearance. After a period of time where the program wasn’t at its best, Barnes has come in and restored it to national prominence with multiple national rankings over the last three seasons going 74-29 during that time. It’s something that he was able to do in his time as a head coach at Texas and Clemson too. He earned a No. 1 overall ranking during his time with the Longhorns and a program-best No. 2 overall ranking during his time at Clemson. He appeared in sixteen NCAA Tournaments, five Sweet Sixteens, three Elite Eights, and one Final Four while at Texas, one Sweet Sixteen during his four years at Clemson, and three NCAA Tournaments during his five years at Providence. Additionally, he signed Top-10 recruiting classes at all three schools. 27 of his former players have gone on to be picked in the NBA Draft and have boasted combined basketball earnings in excess of $715.3 million. Coaches like Rob Lanier, Larry Shyatt, Chris Ogden, Herb Sendek, and Rodney Terry, who have all worked under him, have gotten head coaching jobs at the Division I level at some point during their careers. Barnes is also one of three NCAA Division I head coaches on the NCAA Men’s Basketball Rules Committee."
