not sure why Speedy would leave his Alma mater for a middling A10 team. It’s not like to feel hundred K in extra salary is going to matter to someone like him.

My guess is if he leaves Hofstra it’s going to either be for a much bigger program than us or for an NBA job.

Yes, Twitter is starting to pick up steam that CKE is heading to Providence.

And I get everyone wants Tony, but I'll throw another name out there: Speedy Claxton.

I'd be fine with Claxton or Tony. But if CKE leaves for Providence it's on Dr. W, who had to have known what he was getting into when he hired CKE. Didn't Washington say something about putting the A10 on notice with CKE's hire?

To throw up your hands after two years and say, "We can't afford to match P5 salaries" is weak. Because if that is the case (and it may be) you don't hire a guy with CKE's profile to begin with. You just wind up left at the alter with egg on your face.

If CKE is gone by this evening IMO we need to announce hire Tony's (or Speedy's) hiring by the end of the week. The great thing with getting behind Tony is his connection to the program. That mutual affinity cannot be underestimated and will serve us well when Skinn starts having success, as I think he will.

One last point: If CKE indeed leaves after just two years, I don't EVER want to entertain the prospect of hiring a young, nationally well-regarded coach with a profile like English, since we are clearly not willing, nor capable of, doing what it takes to keep them.

LMAO the one and great Hewitt. JK. I really feel like english didn't do as much as hoped given the firepower of the team. What stinks about College basketball now is most of the players will end up hitting the portal, likely will have to scrape up some freshman and late transfers and take a dud year. GMU deserves a great coach but with the transfer rules and NIL, mason is likely going to have to come up with a competitive package to separate themselves from other mid majors. It's like playing russian roulette every off season. Tough having players with a mindset of going for stats and them moving on up or hitting the portal when they don't get enough minutes.

Bias of course. But with Mason's student enrollment, talent in the DMV etc... I just find it hard to believe how underwhelming the program has been compared to others. 10 years and we haven't won more than two conference tournament games. I think english signing a longer term deal and then bouncing is kinda tough to swallow.

I figured something was up when CKE didn't wish Brad Edwards well on twitter. He was out the door himself. He wanted the BC job before they gave it to Earl Grant and ultimately ended up getting the Mason job.

Plenty of terrible coaches would come like d2 or d3 guys sure. It doesn't mean they would be good fits. See Hewitt and Paulsen. Hewitt wanted a paycheck and not to coach anymore, Paulsen was out of touch thus why he didn't get another job! English was the type of person who could one day have success it just wasn't going to come as quick as people wanted. The other type of guys like Paulsen will never win. Game, portal etc etc have passed them by. Young hungry guys who come out of power 5's who know what it takes to win. This isn't the CAA anymore. There are big time coaches across the conference with pretty sizable athletic budgets.

Someone will have to want to win and be willing to battle it out for about 5-7 years and Mason is going to have to be patient in the process. Or you hire someone who can go grab 3 studs and have a magical season and bolt. It's just way it goes with the history over the last 10 years. The name George Mason is not going to lure any high school kid in. Kids were barely even born when mason went to the final 4.

Agreed.

We need a guy who can recruit all-conference types like Oduro, or Jordan Miller, or guys All-American types like Tyler Kolek.

Until we have a coach that can recruit like that, it will never matter that we have a fanbase that doesn't come out to games, or a basketball budget that is nothing special in-conference.

We need a coach that will plumb the transfer portal for impact players like Ginika Ojiako and Saquan Singleton.
