I don't believe that it's prudent to speculate on academic impropriety.

Just putting out there what I had heard from a person I consider a very good source -- the same source, by the way, who told me that something fairly significant must have happened to scuttle the handshake deal Edwards had with his first choice to replace Hewitt.

In fact, I purposely softened the wording of my post. What I was told is that there were rumblings about "academic fraud," which certainly seems to be a serious charge.

Again, I wouldn't put this out there if I didn't think this was somebody in a position to know.

I'm obviously not trying to hurt the program in any way. TOC and Hewitt have done a good enough job of that on their own.

If we don't hear anything right away, it may be because Mason is still fighting it behind the scenes.

Stuff like this makes you want to root for the BCS to just break completely away from the NCAA (and drag the Big East and A-10 with them for basketball).

I assume that Mason will do the right thing and honor his scholarship, as long as it can be done without counting toward our allotment of 13.

But if as I suspect Mayimba wants to play basketball for a living, the best move at this point might be enrolling ASAP in a NAIA school and having four years of eligibility to work on his game.

Even if he goes to a JUCO and gets his 2-year degree, he may only have 1 year of NCAA eligibility remaining because of the rules governing when your post-high school eligibility clock starts ticking. I'm not sure about that.

With Therence's parents still back in Gabon, hopefully Paulsen and Edwards are helping him sort out his options, and will use their connections to find him the best possible situation.

As disappointed as I am that he'll never suit up for Mason, I sincerely hope he goes on to be successful on the court and in the classroom.

As with most things in life, a happy ending can make it all better.

Show me they fought for him, and fought hard, and I will shut up.

I don't know...maybe 18 months of battling the NCAA might give you an idea they were fighting for him. If Mason were going to throw up their hands and just say "oh well" they wouldn't have kept him around all through last year, all through the summer and had him ready to go this semester.

Nothing in this scenario points to Mason not fighting for this kid to be eligible. All the memos, lawyers, phone calls, begging and pleading in the world aren't enough for the NCAA if something doesn't line up in their eyes. Mason didn't win their appeal. And Syracuse didn't win theirs recently either.....

Bad comparison. Syracuse is already on double-secret probation with the NCAA for a bunch of other stuff, so hardly surprising their appeal was met with the stink-eye.

I'd love to know the details of why our appeal on Mayimba's behalf got denied, but I realize that will never happen.

Mayimba's post seemed to imply the NCAA picked on him because he did not have parents in the US to fight for him, not that he did not have anyone fighting for him (GMU, Coaches, etc.). I think the word "Who" was capitalized by autocorrect due to the . at the end of U.S.

I'm sure Mason fought via the basic protocol. But now I'm talking about taking the fight up a notch. Al Sharpton dirty. NAACP dirty. Make these mother f**kers defend why they denied Therance so we can all see the bastards they really are. Transparency is what the NCAA does NOT want. If you are going to deny a kid eligibility for alleged issues with his 9th grade transcript, but have yet to do nothing to the BCS punks who have their students take fake classes, I have no issue with Mason making a different kinda Cinderalla run. Right at the NCAA. Mr. George Mason would be proud.

One also might wonder why Saint James (and Montrose Christian for that matter), isn't now questioning the NCAA because ultimately those schools accepted the classes he took in Gabon as credit towards his diploma (or not).

Are we talking about 9th grade? We're not talking about 3 years of high school in the US (including the honor roll) or the credits that I've earned at Mason, are we? We're talking about my 9th grade transcript from Gabon? We're talking about 9th grade! 9th grade! Have I proven that I'm a good student? Sure I have! But, we're not talking about my hard work as a student for the past 4 years in the US, are we? We're talking about 9th grade in Gabon! 9th grade! Sure, I'm repeating myself. But, I don't understand why I'm ineligible because of 9th grade in Gabon?

9th grade! We're talking about 9th grade! NCAA: This is my life! And, we're talking about 9th grade in Gabon. Shouldn't my 4 years as a student-athlete in the US count? We're talking about 9th grade! 9th grade!

This is a damn good point and one I hinted at earlier in this thread.

Mayimba was admitted to two private American high schools and a university based on a transcript documenting his academic progress, but then the NCAA gets involved and says it doesn't pass muster?

The more I think about this, something just isn't adding up.

Yes. Unfortunately, Therence, it appears that we're talking about 9th grade.

Well considering there s only one subject that requires four years of study to get a diploma, it would be one class in the 9th Grade that te NCAA has a problem with.

Not necessarily. It could be any of the classes he took in Gabon because if the NCAA didn't give him credit for them, he might have fallen short of the eligibility requirements for his core subjects.

Why were we led to believe if he took a year at Mason and did well, he would be fine? And if the NCAA saw something wrong last august, why not kick him out then?

What does it matter which part of his prior academics isn't being counted?

What if he didn't actually go to school in Gabon and take the necessary credits that are required? Is that really fair when some other recruit could have been here that actually followed the rules? You don't know.

Then Montrise Christian shouldn't have admitted him as a sophomore and Saint James should not have let him graduate without all the necessary credits.

My guess is this is about the semantics of the courses and what the NCAA considers either an English class or a social studies/history class.
