GIVING DAY 2023
Just saw something on my Twitter feed about Mayimba hitting four 3-pointers in a row and scoring 21 points for Gabon in the Africas tournament.

I know it's Mason we're talking about -- second only to the former U.S.S.R. in its iron-fisted control of information -- but shouldn't we have heard something about his eligibility situation by now?

Even if it's just to tell us "We're still waiting on the motherf-ing NCAA," that would be better than this total radio silence.

It's ridiculous. This kid has a chance to be a significant contributor. He's still listed on the roster and it's August 27. Come the F on already.

Do we have no computer nerds who can just hack into the NCAA records and alter his transcript to show he went to a school that did not mysteriously burn down? This is really on us at this point. If this was any show on USA Network those transcripts would have already been altered.

and I would imagine if an individual were going to be playing for Mason, he should probably be ready to go to class on day 1. But I suppose there are exceptions.....

I get that, but if he's definitely gone, why is he still listed on the damn roster? That's ridiculous even by Mason's standards.

Nigeria defeated Gabon 88-64 in the quarterfinals today. Gabon will be playing its final games on Friday & Saturday for 5th to 8th place. Does anyone have a problem with Mayimba representing his country while awaiting a decision by the NCAA on his eligibility?

Never said I had a problem representing his county, but thanks for trying to put words in my mouth.

Schools starts Monday. I'd hope the NCAA, which has been dragging this out F O R E V E R, would have the young man's situation taken care of before he begins his second year of college. Meaning he, Mason and the NCAA should have this settled before Monday.

but hey, if you want him to rep his country, there is another tournament in September, the All Africa Games, from Sept 3-19th. Does anyone have a problem with him representing his country for a couple of weeks while the semester is in full swing?

If Mayimba wants to participate and has Coach Paulsen's approval, then I certainly have no objections.

I'm guessing perhaps the school might have a little more to say about it. This might go just a little above Coach Paulsen's head.

You'd really be ok with a student athlete missing the first 3 weeks of the semester? Guess we have different priorities on "student-athlete". You'd think with the troubles we had under the past administration with (alledged) grade issues and a certain individual not playing his final semester, we might want these guys to get off to the best academic start they can. And missing the first 3 weeks of school probably isn't the best way to do it, especially if the school just fought and won your eligibility with the NCAA.

But maybe I'm just weird that way.

Accommodations can be made. I had a friend who had 6 credits left when he was deployed to Afghanistan and his professors allowed him to work remotely.

this should go without saying but just in case...

...a forced deployment to Afghanistan vs a basketball tournament. Your friend should have been given every opportunity to do what ever he needed to do. He didn't choose to go to Afghanistan.

Mason is fighting for this kid to be allowed to play college basketball. Don't you think he sort of owes it to them if he is cleared to play to actually be on campus?

I guess I'm on my own island here.....

This is precisely the part that I don't understand.

If Mayimba is still enrolled in school and on the roster -- I don't mean this the wrong way, but yes, taking up a scholarship that could be given to somebody else -- that clearly suggests to me that Mason expects him to be declared eligible at some point.

But the fact that he is apparently getting ready to begin his second year of college, and there is still no ruling one way or the other from the NCAA, that doesn't make any sense.

I know the NCAA moves at a glacial pace, but they need to make a decision one way or the other. If Mayimba isn't eligible to play in Division I, it's not fair to keep him hanging on when he could easily transfer down to D-2 or JUCO and get on the court.

The situation is ridiculous all the way around.
