The Paul Hewitt Thread

Take away Hewitt's first season, when he had the CAA POY, another good senior big man in Mike Mo and other pieces left over from Larranaga, and his record is 32-36.

Take away the meaningless CBI last season and his record is 29-34.

No NITs or NCAAs.

And this is from a guy who inherited a program that had just won 27 games in one season, including an NCAA second-round game?

Absolutely unacceptable. How anyone can look at this record and think Hewitt deserves one more day as Mason's head coach is beyond me.

He just needs time to get his players in.

Larranaga lost games too - hey look at Miami, they haven't repeated from last year's ACC champs.

Quit being a broken record.

You're not as good a fan as I am.

If Hancock hadn't transferred, we'd be ranked right now - set us back at least 3 decades. Probably more.

If Arledge hadn't sat out we'd be ranked right now.

If Larranaga hadn't recruited so poorly we'd be ranked right now.

I like the CBI better anyway - RAC games rule.

The difference in the A-10 and CAA is light years. We never had to play teams like vcu in the CAA.

It's the players fault, they don't listen. But Hewitt develops them really well.

Homecourt disadvantage is a real thing.

(did i miss any?)

While you're at it, why not just "take away" any of the wins these past 3 years! That way you can claim he's 0-34.

Larranaga graduates 5 seniors and a NBA point guard but still finished above .500 and won his game one in the ACC tourney. We blow 20 games and lose the play in game in the A10 tourney. Just facts. Yes, I still wish we had Coach L.

OK, let's do that. Then even his most loyal apologists like you couldn't defend keeping him around.

Look--I'm not happy about the way things are going, but I see little point in making up numbers to support the idea that things are worse than they are.

It's roughly equivalent to a "loyal apologist" dismissing all the games we lost by 6 or fewer points as not really losses. Making up your own set of "facts" doesn't improve the case you've already made.

OK, how's this for a fact: Our program is headed in the wrong direction at warp speed.

Throw out the wins and losses. This motherf**ker still hasn't signed a legit PG for his PG heavy system. That's enough evidence that he can't recruit like he thought he could at this level. And one of the reasons he did recruit so well at GA T was b/c UNC has flatlining after Dean Smith left. If you go back and look hewitt had his most "success" when big time recruits had to pick between him and old man Bill Guthridge in a downtrodden UNC program. Well we are in our Bill Guthridge era at the moment...so lets hope. If Hewitt cared he'd resign. But he isn't half the man Guthridge is.

GS,

I believe that you are confused. Bill Guthridge was UNC's head coach during the same 3-year period (1997-2000) that Paul Hewitt was the coach at Siena. BTW, Guthridge was 80-28 at UNC, with 2 Final Four appearances.

yes, i am confused. it was Matt Doherty. Bill had Dean's boys for those three years, then the guys he recruited shit the bed with Doherty. Either way, my point is still valid. Hewitt was in the right place at the right time and still couldn't muster better than a 3rd place finish in 11 years in ACC, and a 72-104 conf record. Bonafide loser.

Crack this code and win free beer on GSII at next years A10 tourney.

You mean the year that Hewitt basically admitted Pearson and Morrison were running the team?

Feinstein was on the Junkies this morning and was asked if Hewitt was on the hot seat. He didn't think so because Hewitt is a TOC hire and, while this season was an "unmitigated disaster", Hewitt is a nice guy. Feinstein added that if you aren't a nice guy and lose, you probably don't get brought back. What Feinstein didn't mention is anything about TOC and if he'll be back given his contract is up in a few months.

This has been one of my worst fears. Hewitt is a nice guy. To keep any (non-union or non-government) job you have to be nice or good. You can be both, but you have to be at least one. Well, Hewitt has the nice part down (and other things working in his favor), so he may not have to ever get the good part down. Many managers can't bring themselves to fire nice people who are otherwise not performing. If the scenario that Feinstein has touched on plays out, Hewitt could be bringing mediocrity/disaster to Mason basketball for many years to come.

For the sake of Mason basketball, I hope I am completely wrong.
