The Paul Hewitt Thread

Does anybody have any reason what so ever to even entertain the idea of Hewitt coming back?

(Actual reasons he should be brought back on his own accomplishments or ability, not logistical or reasons of why we shouldnt fire him etc....money, buyout, recruits etc. )

I'm with you, but I won't hold it against the administration if they are reticent to put a $1.4 M buyout together AND go pay a new coach. I think, though, the administration has a clear opportunity to show us they get it by thanking TOC for his time at Mason and telling him to hit the bricks when his contract expires in June.
I agree that would send a message. The message everyone wants is probably not going to happen for financial reasons, but that one could be made at no additional cost.

he's def gonna stay one more year... he's gonna hang on to the excuse Coach L's players held him back (which is a lie)... he's gonna give it one year with his own players b4 he throws in the towel... mark my words

I fully expect Hewitt to return next season, which probably will be his last here if he loses 20 games in back-to-back seasons.

I'm sure there is a quiet supporter here that's really trying to think of an answer here other than looking at his slick back hair and fancy suits...

Ooh can we get that countdown clock on the header of MasonHoops.com?

That would be an outstanding statement!

Guys - maybe we are being to hard on Hewitt.

It's not like he has taken a school that has had big basketball success in the past 10 years and taken them to the worst conference record and the first 20 loss record in 20 years (give or take). Worst we can do is lose 20 games. That has been done 7 times in program history. Heck I know it hasn't happened since 1995, but come on, did he really inherit that good a team? It's not like he had a player of the year candidate on the team when he got it or a player that could have won any big awards like Most Outstanding Player in the Final Four for a National Championship team. It's not like he got a team that had been to the post season 5 out of the previous 6 years. It's not like the team we had before Hewitt had just won an NCAA tournament game with the best NCAA seed in school history. Even Coach L had a losing season, OK well it was his first season, and then the next year he made the big dance, but come on. Maybe it isn't Hewitt...uh

Yes, tongue FIRMLY in cheek

Money. That's the only semi-reasonable answer I can come up with.

From my other post: "Actual reasons he should be brought back on his own accomplishments or ability, not logistical or reasons of why we shouldnt fire him etc....money, buyout, recruits etc."

So seems besides the logistics....there is nothing he has done to warrant staying.

#1 - Someone needs to start a "FirePaulHewitt...Again." twitter.
#2 - I guess all of the "Mason is not Kentucky/UCLA/Duke" talk is gone.

My bad. I didn't see your previous post with all of the restrictions, so I just replied to your follow-up post. Other than money (which is a huge sticking point), I do not see anything Hewitt has done in his first three seasons to warrant coming back.

lol they arent restrictions...was just thinking all we ever see for reasons to keep him around have nothing to do with him or the job he has done (or hasnt done). Was wondering if anybody had a reason that Hewitt himself has done, that warrants at least being brought up to bolster his case to stay.

I was talking to a female friend of mine last night that has no ties to Mason at all. She is a huge Pittsburgh Pirates fan, and said, until we have 20 straight losing seasons, to roll with the punches.

Has this year sucked, yes. I have been supporting this program since '96, and other than Larranaga's first year, I don't recall a year like this. However, going to games, home or away, are an escape. You don't know who you will meet, or make new friends with, or an opinion that hasn't been heard before from someone new.

Not for one second have I debated about not renewing my season tickets. The only way I would give those up is if I leave the DC area. That's not happening anytime in the foreseeable future.

If TOC and Cabrerra bring him back, my hunch is that they will focus more on believing Hewitt will turn things around in the future rather than trying to defend what he has accomplished in here in the past. I'm not saying they have a leg to stand on with that approach, but it's much easier to sell something that hasn't happened rather than defend something that has.

I do have to admit to being intrigued by what our roster will look like next year if he returns. I really think Hewitt will blow things up, which means everything from asking several players to leave to brining in JUCO and 5th-year transfers. It's self-preservation time, and I think he realizes another year would be a gift from heaven.

Washingtonian,

You are unquestionably one of the most dedicated Mason fan that I've ever seen. But, for me, this is the second time that I've considered not renewing my season tickets (although I will likely give Hewitt one more season). The first time was after Westhead's 4th season. Fortunately, Mason fired him and hired Larranaga.
